Any suggestions for a moderately priced hotel in New Orleans, one that would have shuttle service to Amtrak, would be appreciated. We are looking for a place that would be close to all attractions, no car since we'll be taking the Sunset Ltd. but want to be sure we get transportation to train station guaranteed to be timed when Sunset arrives in NOL for our return to LAX.

Depending on the time of year, most hotels in New Orleans run upwards of $150 per night and more.

I would recommend staying in the French Quarter northwest of Jackson Square for easy walking access to the Riverfront and Aquarium areas. Safer than staying around the station or along Canal Street, and it allows you the option to run around the French Quater and Bourbon Street after dark without severely risking personal safety. Then you dont have to worry about walking all the way back to your hotel.

And breakfast at Cafe du Monde is always fun www.cafedumonde.com.

It is also a quick taxi ride to the station from this district. A good hotel with Concierge service can arrange exact pickup times for you in case the Sunset Limited is running late. Of course check with Amtrak the morning of your departure for the trains updated arrival times and what time for you to check into/arrive at the station.

Check www.expedia.com or www.orbitz.com for special deals for your dates of travel. Based on the amenities and comfort level you may be looking for you can view options, pictures of the hotels, and street maps. Both sites have 'Hotel Map View' to make selecting the best location for you easy.

Kitty, there was a similar question back in May with numerous replies, suggest you check those postings. FYI, hoteliiers in NOL are on the whole arrogant and very independent; they have a product that is in demand (many conventions, meetings, etc. through out the year-not to mention Saint's games and a quaint ritual you may have heard of called Mardi Gras) and price their product accordingly.

In June, my son and I stayed at the Drury Inn & Suites in New Orleans, 820 Poydras Street. (504) 529-7800. I paid $ 85 for one night. It is a beautiful and very clean hotel in a restored 1917 building. We walked from the Amtrak Station to the hotel, it is 4/10 of a mile. They have evening snacks and beverages, morning breakfast. The streetcar line runs on the side street at the corner where the hotel is located.

The Hyatt Hotel is an easy walk from the station and has free shuttle service to the French Quarter. It is typically quite expensive but if you have any discounts or check one of the online hotel booking companies, you might get lucky. It is right by the Superdome and is just a few blcoks from the streetcar line.

Kitty,

Have you been to New Orleans before? How long is your layover? Anytime for major sightseeing while there?

The plan is to stay in NOL for 3 nights. I think that's sufficient to see the sights, also to coordinate the stay with the Sunset's schedule.

Thanks to all who gave me some good ideas!
