Well, just in case Amtrak long-distance is endangered, I decided to book another short trip this summer (even though I really can't afford it!) to Truckee/North Lake Tahoe, with a stop in Glenwood Spring (and bus to Aspen) and maybe an overnight in Salt Lake City. Then when (assuming there are still long-distance trains!) I do my spring 2007 California trip, I won't have to include Truckee/Tahoe and will have more time for the rest. So ANYWAY, does anyone have any hotel advice for Truckee or North Lake Tahoe? I'm looking for comfortable but nothing fancy, with good price and a convenient location to the public transportation I'll have to take from Truckee to North Lake Tahoe. Would you advise I stay in Truckee and just go to North Lake Tahoe by day on public transportation? Or stay in North Lake Tahoe? How many nights would you stay here?

Thanks for your advice.

I am assuming you must like cold weather. Otherwise, Tahoe/Truckee will be miserable. My preferece for that type of weather is to watch it glide by outside the train window.

Sojourner, If you are over 21, the Biltmore or Cal Neva at North Lake are good bets. What I would do is take the Tahoe Casino Express from Reno to South Shore Lake Tahoe to either Harvey's, Harrah's, Horizon' or Caesars. South Lake Tahoe according to me is the most beautiful. If you like skiing, Heavenly Valley is amazing, and it goes into 2 states, Cali and Nevada. If you need any info about that area, I can be reached at goduckies05@yahoo.com I will be glad to help you, and with enough warning, I wouldn't mind meeting you to take you to there. I am from Oregon, so I would drive from there. Tahoe is a beatiful area, and you will love it.

GoDuckies, I am already booked to Truckee, not Reno; don't think I can change. I would be happy to take a tour of the whole lake if anyone knows one. But what I really need is advice on lodgings in a convenient area in Tahoe City/N Lake Tahoe or in downtown Truckee. I need a place where I won't have trouble with finding public transport. Mr Harris, is it really so cold there in summer? I don't think so!

Sorry, I just went back and realized I misread your initial post, I thought you were going in the next couple of months, that is mid-winter. I really don't know what the summer weather is there, but I'll bet you can find out on the web. They probably have some sort of tourist site with the weather information.

Actually, I just found out I can change my ticket, I forgot I hadn't booked that part yet. Maybe I should go to San Francisco instead, and make that day trip to Yosemite. . . .

There are two B&Bs in Truckee within walking distance of the town center and Amtrak: The River Street Inn and the Richardson House. You can see guest reviews on tripadvisor.com. A local transit system called TART connects Truckee with nearby tourist areas.
