If we take Amtrak from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, can we check our baggage? Isn't Tampa the last stop, so we are thinking that it will be easy to get our checked bags off the train and out of the baggage car in Tampa, rather than hauling them with us to the car where we'll be sitting.

Apparently you can't check/retrieve baggage at Tampa (strange) so no.

Current schedules do show Tampa as having checked luggage facilities...

If you cannot check luggage, just travel a little light and take it on with you. Use suitcase with wheels.

Kairho, the 10/31/2005 Silver Star schedule does not show checked luggage facilities @ Tampa.

abefroman329, my copy of the system timetable does show checked baggage service, as does the Amtrak website...

The full Silver Star schedule shows checked baggage, but the smaller "Cross-Florida Service" schedule does not. Maybe you can add luggage to the train at Tampa but not retrieve it? Worth a call to Amtrak, anyway.
