The question that always comes to me at odd hours is what will happen to the Amish who rely on Amtrak for their travels? I have run into some Amish people and have had a chance to speak with them and of course I bet they will be livid. Do you know if there is an Amish group trying to Boycott the Bush Administration and other people who are trying to cut services from Amtrak? If you know of any Amish families have them go to www.saveamtrak.org

From what I know of the Amish, I don't think their feathers get ruffled too easily.

This administration isn't likely to lose sleep over what the Amish think or need. Perhaps because young Amish don't serve in the military?

Most of the Amish I have met on the SWC were traveling from the Midwest to Disneyland. Since many of their communities are based on agriculture, or at least growing their own food, winter was their time to take a vacation and have some family fun. I assume they are also not in the public school system, so it is a good time of year for the whole family to go together.

Without Amtrak, this tradition would probably cease, and all those tourist dollars that are spent on their trip would just go away. They are also spent at an off-season time where the money they spend is probably a significant part of the economies of their destination.

I suppose the anti-rail folks can counter this economic loss by adding a horse and buggy lane to the interstate?

All I know is I was talking with a mennonite woman in the chicago train station who had no idea how amtrak was funded, etc. I wonder if amish, mennonites, etc have no clue on how the federal govt operates since they live on their own and only go to school through the 8th grade?
