Sometimes that is the situation when the train is so late it does not get into Los Angeles until the following morning. Other times it could be an assortment of reasons. The Coast Starlight right now, especially if we get more rain, is going to be very late north and south, and available equipment will be limited I imagine as it was last year. Once last winter, they even had to use a Horizon consist of Coaches and Dinettes until Emeryville.

ARGH!!!!!!I just called AMTRAK to ask them about the Parlour cars, and they said "There are Parlour Cars on EVERY Coast Starlight out there right now" Not quite sure who to believe seeing that on trainorderes.com there was mention of NO Parlour cars.....Hmmmmmmm!

The Amtrak peoples' version is having all the festivities that are normally done in the parlour done in the Diner or substitute Lounge. And by the way all of the parlour cars are bad ordered.... on trainorders they said that they were all out of service and only one trainset has a substitute Lounge otherwise they don't having anything were the parlour car should be.

I noted the same report as did Mr. Sunset.

I'm not placing any bets on the Parlours return to service as they are probably the most visible target out there to the "reformers' who are of the philosophy that there is no place for any on-board enhancements with a publicly funded transportation entity.

The "simplified' Dining service previously noted here that is to be implemented, along with the likely removal of Sightseer Lounges, on the City and Eagle is simply indicative of where the "reformers' wish to head.

I have no doubt that Amtrak will lie to you and say there is a Parlour car on the train when in fact it is a Sightseer Lounge. When I departed Los Angeles on the 28th of last month, the on-board staff always referred to the replacement lounge as a parlour car. By the way I did see a parlour car on the ten-hour late #11 on the 29th somewhere near Klamath Falls, and that train was running in reverse order--sleeping cars and baggage car on the rear, obviously they didn't turn it in Seattle.

I suppose after reading this thread that they are simply putting the phase IVb paint on the Parlour cars. I really hope they still include the Parlour Car logo...the phase ivb would look odd on the P.C.'s to me.

The fact of the matter is the ex-Santa Fe High Level Lounges, built for the El Capitan, are 40 years old. They use non-standard parts from the rest of the fleet. Their construction is different from the Superliner fleet.

As Mr Norman notes, in the current environment, a realist or a cynic will not expect these cars to be in service too much longer.
