Another example of familiarity with a danger can kill you. The guy had probably been working around planes for years, and all it took was one second of loss of caution. There are well known distances and usually marked areas of "come no closer than this when engine is running" zones around jet engines. Like anthing safety related the distance is probably somewhat greater than absolutely necessary, but once you fudge it too far you are gone. No second chance. Once it starts to pull you there is no escape.
