It's nice to have a face to put with the voice. It was interesting that Alex Trebek and I seem to have the same problem with Julie not understanding us. This seems to happen most often in noisy location like train stations!

Frank, you might find it amusing that sometimes when I say "Salinas" and she says "I think you said Goleta."
Surprisingly, she looks a lot like I pictured her. And when she was on TV, it was definitely "our" Julie's voice.

I didnt know julie was a real person, thought it was a computer voice.
i thought it was appropriate she got one question correct by answering with "thomas the tank engine".

OH NO!!!!! I forgot completely about that, so didn't watch Jeopardy last night (I often do watch the show, though) -- so what did she say when Alex interviewed the contestants at the end of the first round? Did she say something like "I am the VOICE OF AMTRAK in their computerized reservations system"?

She said that she was the voice of Amtrak's automated system and others, which she did not name. When Alex asked her to say a line she chose, "I'm sorry, I didn't understand." And you're correct, Mr. Toy, she is sweet and easy to forgive. I guess that's one of the reasons she was chosen to do these recordings.
It's not an easy job. Think of all of the combinations that have to be recorded. I did a series of Language Lab tapes for the University of Costa Rica when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer there 1963-65. I was chosen because Californians don't have any noticeable accent. It was hard work getting each sentence done correctly!

I caught it as well and it was a good show regardless of her not winning. I believe she also does a voice for the USPS but im unsure.

I was a Talking book narrator for several years. Cookbooks, poetry, textbooks, fiction. Requires elements of consistency and warmth as well as accuracy and clarity. I think Julie does a good job. Whether the voicemail system works well, is a different matter.
Oooops. Better mention AMTRAK.

I assume you're dubious about Californians not having an accent. That's what the director of the program, who was from the University of Kansas, said. This was way before "Valley Girls" and our group had a large number of volunteers from the South, New England and Wisconsin. Maybe I was just the default choice.

I said that because, linguistically speaking, there is no such thing as not having an accent. By definition, everyone has some type of accent--largely geographical, but also involving other factors (socio-economic; generational; oral, mandibular and dental anatomy; exposure, etc.) It is true that certain geographic accents have more distinctive traits than others, but everyone has an accent, for the simple reason that language and verbal communication are diverse, and many factors are present. Since the website is now available en espaņol, can we expect a Spanish speaking "Julia" soon? Does anyone know if the ticket machines offer a Spanish option? My brother used one yesterday to buy his tickets LAX/VTA but I didn't notice if it gave a choice. The system worked flawlessly, by the way, even letting him buy the tickets with the senior discount.
