Will only be in the city one full day. Any reccomendations?

Take a bus tour of the city. That will give you a good overview and you won't miss the main things to see. Then you can go back to whatever appeals to you. I personally loved going to Pike Place Market(can't remember the exact name!!) and taking the underground tour. Whenever we go to a new city we try to take a bus tour( the smaller the bus the better)and then decide what we want to do.

Downtown has become a little grungy. Eddie Bauer's flagship store is gone. Can Nordstrom be far behind? The new Library is worth a visit as is the Art Museum. If you have time take a ferry. Great views back at the city. A half day bus tour isn't a bad idea. it will give you some ideas and you can take it from there. I still love Seattle and have some great memories of good times there in the '80's. If you are interested in Aviation, take the city bus to the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. See the first 747, a Concorde, and an Air Force One all in one place and the famous "Red Barn" where Boeing started. Sadly, they've left town for Chicago.

I had most of a day in Seattle between trains on my 2002 trip. I stayed at Pioneer Square Hotel, and caught a nearby city bus up to the Seattle Center and Space Needle. I took the elevator to the top of the Space Needle and spent some time there, then I walked through the Natural History Museum at Seattle Center, then caught the monorail back downtown, then a city bus back to Pioner Square. At the Seattle Center there are also a bunch of "amusement park rides" which you may enjoy, especially if there are kids traveling with you.
I never got to Pike Street Market, but will have to catch that on my next trip -- that's the place where they throw the fish across the market, right?

I take the "poor man's harbor cruise" - the ferry to Bainbridge Island & return. Under $5 (you pay one-way & ride the return for free) last time I took it with beautiful views of the city and (if it's clear) Mt Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula Mountains & even the North Cascades. Taken at off peak hours, it is not crowded & has a nice snack bar. I prefer to follow the trip with a nice lunch at Ivar's Clam Central Station (just a few steps away from the ferry dock).

I second Grandma Judy on the Winslow ferry. It's a wonderful ride. My brother lives on Bainbridge Island and commuted to downtown on the ferry and always complained about it. Seems like a great way to commute.
That's where they throw the fish, RRRich. It's a great place to walk around and have lunch, a little here, a little there. Across the street once I saw four African American guys who were singing a cappella. For rhythm they clapped. They were fun to listen to.
