I've been so jealous reading about everyone's plans that I just made reservations to travel in mid-September to California (from Wisconsin) to see an old friend. CHI-LAX on the SW Chief (first time on this route), LAX-EMY on the Coast Starlight (first time on this part of the route), overnight in EMY, then EMY-CHI on the California Zephyr (did this route in the other direction in 2001). Add in the Hiawatha to/from Chicago, and I can hardly wait to start packing. Deluxe rooms all the way - partially paid with Amtrak Guest Rewards (I've been saving a long time!).

Sounds lovely, Judy. I loved the SW Chief and Ca Zephyr when I took them last year; on the SW Chief, the red rocks west of Albuquerque were esp spectacular. Have a great trip!

Sojourner -- think you mean SW Chief for those red rocks as that is the train that goes through Albuquerque. Yes I agree they are spectacular.
Grandma Judy --- sounds like a great trip. Did the CZ two years ago (like you in the other direction) and found much of the ride spectacular. Will be taking the SW Chief again in about a week. (Take this a couple of times a year as I have kin in AZ). I never tire of the trip. Have a great trip!!
Dee --- counting down --- leaving a week from today on next trip.

Sounds like a great trip, let us know how it goes, I especially want to hear how the connection was from the Starlight to the Zephyr. I am considering this, but want to hear what it involves first.
Have a great trip.

Starlight to Zephyr connection north & eastbound requires an overnight between EMY and SAC. Because there is no direct unbroken connection in this direction, I could not book it as a single trip to use rewards points. (Interestingly enough, in the opposite direction I could - not really fair is it?)
