From Chicago on 6/17 they show a roomette @ $242. Less than half what it has been shown for recently. That is from CHI-EMY or SFC if you want to include the thruway ticket

Since fares have gone up (it's about $200 more than it cost me last year to go to New Orleans), I'm going to gamble more by booking coach, then upgrade on board.
Several years ago, you could bargin and get rooms for "pennies on the dollar". Now, conductors can not do that. However, I think they sell them at the lowest rate bucket. I'm not sure, though. Also, you can save some money by upgrading down the line. They will only charge you for the upgrade from the closest station you upgraded. For example, I rode coach from LA-Emeryville, but upgraded around Oxnard. Thus, I was only charged for the roomette from OXN-EMY.

I am sure there are bargains available..but if one is planning a trip from Chicago to Emeryville on this train for example...and you want a sleeper...you're just about certain to be disappointed if you wait til you board. Not a wise risk to take really and why i'm pointing it out now as it appears at such a low rate..basically half price compared to what it is on other days of the month.

That's the point I forgot to make. Trains like the CZ, Starlight, and Empire Builder fill up quickly. You might have a chance on the Southwest Chief, and trains like the TX Eagle, City of New Orleans, and Sunset Limited almost always have space available.

BOOK IT! BOOK IT!
I got a CZ roomette for this rate for an April 18th CHI departure. It was significantly higher every other day for a week in either direction.
After buying the CZ ticket online I built the rest of the trip around my CZ segment.
