I just tried it from my BlackBerry. Very good idea. Now we just need email alerts about train status sent as text messages to phones. How come Amtrak is now finally embracing consumer technology?

Cool, I can't wait to try this on my Axim.

In Europe conductors carry PDA's with integrated internet that connects instantly to the reservatiosn network via cell phone signal. The conductors now rarely collect tickets since the entire manifest, up to the second is always with that.

I think text messaging train status to passengers who request it before leaving would be a GREAT idea, and does not seem very hard compared to other recent online projects such as creating an entire new Amtrak.com in Spanish.
