could leave NOL at 6am instead of 11:55 am, Sunset could hit Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson, and Maricopa at prime times for max customers. Then reach LA at 5:00am.

If I remember correctly, the Sunset is operating at the times preferred by Union Pacific. It's timekeeping has improved since it went on the present schedule in spring 2005.

That was before the western double track construction and before the directional running between Houston and Beaumont.

Either way we will have some cities served at dawn.

I think that schedule adjustment would add riders, but I guess if the UP won't let it happen there isn't much you can do.

In January 2007, I am planning a trip from Chicago to Arizona (on 422 - the Eagle and then on the Sunset after San Antonio). The destination is Tucson, but I am going to get off in Yuma. I'd rather get off at 5:19am than 11:59pm, especially if things are running late.

The last time I did that trip in 2001, we were supposed to get into Tucson at 8:24pm, but were 7 hours late and got in at 3:30am. Not fun. But those were the days of the "guranatee certificates" so we got a free trip the next year because we lost the rental car because of the train delay.
