I am thinking of adding, to my tentative early spring trip, a stop in Little Rock as I head north on the Texas Eagle. That would add one more state capital I've never visited to an itinerary that includes 3 others--a kind of mini-state capital tour (plus New Orleans and San Antonio).
My questions: I see the northbound Texas Eagle gets in in the middle of the night. My questions:
(a) What is the train station at Little Rock like? Is it safe to arrive in the middle of the night?
(b) I think I want to stay downtown within walking distance to the capitol and other sites. Is that a good location? Do you have any reasonably priced hotel recs, or recommend the best street to stay on, or anything of the king?
(c) Is the train station far from the area where the hotel where I would stay is?
(d) I presume, it being in the middle of the night, that I will have to take a taxi. Is there a reliable taxi service? Do I need to book it in advance? What is the cost?
Thanks for the info!!!

I've only seen the Little Rock station from the window of the Texas Eagle in, yes, the middle of the night, but it looked adequately safe and hospitable. I can't say anything one way or another about hotels. Little Rock is the largest city in Arkansas, so I think it fairly certain that you can count on 24 hour taxi service being available.

You might try this link to help you plan. It is a shame that the arrival/departure for the Eagle is in the middle of the night. The station is only of couple of blocks from the capitol, but several blocks from a hotel. Cabs will be available and most of the hotels will probably pick you up. I would suggest you stay near the River Market area downtown. There are some very nice hotels but there are also some B&B's near downtown as well. If you are going to be here in May you might try the weekend of Riverfest. Lots of entertainment and arts. Here is a link that will give you a lot of info. http://www.littlerock.com/
