Tehachapi Loop or Cajon Pass will be good for starters. Either should be just a daytrip for you.

Drive safe and take lot's of pictures. I want to see your work in Trains Magazine as the next great California railroad photographer!

You'll need the advice of folks much closer to southern California for that info. Especially for how to get there driving. I just know the names of the places which have international fame among railfans!

Try a visit to the Fullerton Amtrak station. On Friday evenings about 5 PM a bunch of railfans, including many photographers, gather at the east end of the north platform. I am often there. Many people will be glad to answer your questions. And Fullerton station is a pretty good place to take pictures, too.

If you don't have time (yet) to get out to Tehachapi or Cajon, try downtown Pomona. The station is easily accessible by car, and the UP has 2 parallel main lines through there. Freights run anytime on either line; Amtrak's Sunset runs 3 times a week on the ex-SP line, and Metrolink runs on weekdays on the ex-LA&SL line.
