Can someone PLEASE be sure that our Chris Guenzler is told about this ULTRA RARE DETOUR before train 4 departs LA tonight (12-29-06)??? I would love to see a trip report from him done aboard this rare detour. ===================================
A BIG HEADS UP for any of our readers in the north Texas area!!! Amtrak trains 3 and 4 are BOTH being detoured via AMARILLO and CLOVIS TX!!!!! Does anyone have any schedule TIMES ETA passing Amarillo for these Amtrak trains??? Truly Amazing that this happens some 14 months after my 10-23-05 Tehachapi Amtrak train 11 reroute. This RARE DETOUR is over the former ATSF SOUTHERN TRANSCON route used by the former San Francisco Chief.
When was the last time this ULTRA RARE Amarillo Amtrak REROUTE happened??? --- Daniel

ATSF was historically penurious about "calling out the rotary," I gather BNSF inherited that.
OK. 3/4 are going the route of the Texas Chief. Ho-hum. Next.

But it is mostly double track now. Should be worth seeing. Should not be too much (any?) slower since most of the freights will be moving at 70 mph.

UPDATE this detour has been EXTENDED until at least SUNDAY 12-31-06. See the late trainorders posting that I included for further info.
For those that would still like to ride this rare detour it looks like tonights (SAT 12-30-06) train 4 WILL also be routed via Amarillo TX. I just found this message posted to the Yahoo "All Aboard" list by a contributor who is apparently a BNSF train dispatcher. Trainorders is now reporting (10:11am) that the Amarillo DETOUR has been EXTENDED to at least SUN 12-31-06 new years eve. This should give any Amtrak fans ample opportunity to ride this rare mileage: --- Daniel : =============================================================== http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,1310091

The duration of this detour might lenghten or shorten depending on the weather conditions.

Hmmm a sign of things to come?
I know New Mexico now owns or soon will own the Raton line and this quieted the rumors of a permanently rerouted Chief. But this is basically the route if the Chief does get rerouted.
I wondered what Amtrak (and more importantly BNSF) would do after hearing about the heavy snows. I doubted very much if a plow train would be sent from Topeka...not rotary but a push type plow. Guess they'll wait for it to melt. Sure does help when there are two transcons

Kind of like the last few years of the Rio Grande narrow gauge during the 1960's. Rather than plow the line they just shut down for the winter.

I hope the NMRR operators are fair to Amtrak...Is Chris on the Chief? I thought he said he was going to Forth Worth on #2?
