We have a credit to use and are thinking about taking the CS rt from LAX to KFS in April. Can anyone here give me more info about Klamath? Specifically is there a hotel near the station or rental car (Enterprise has an office in town not at airport). We took the CS last year and I remember a Shilo Inn picking up folks at the station.
We are going more for the CS ride and to use our credit but want to pick a town that would be okay for a couple of nights and can't afford to do rt from LA to PDX or SEA so we need an in between spot. Thanks!!!

Have you ever taken the Starlight before? If not, I highly recommend you stay on to Eugene. The most spectacular part of the route is between KFS and EUG.

Yes we have done the CS before. We are really taking this trip to use a credit up. We need to keep out of pocket costs down and so we need to depart from LA and do a RT to avoid airfare. I am sure you know the choices from LA (we have taken all of these trains) and thought the CS would be most enjoyable. With that in mind we can do a round trip on CS but can't go farther than Klamath. If anyone has other suggestions I am open to them. Need to take the trip in early April. Thanks!

A stop in Dunsmuir, one stop short of KFS would seem to offer more options for hotels, restaurants and very likely auto rental. It appears you are attempting to get the most for a limited travel budget and still find a location that has some attractions. Dunsmuir may satisfy your goals.

Did you know that there is a travel agency in Klamath Falls that specializes in train travel? You could contact them for information such as you are seeking.
I'm new in this forum, so I don't know if I'm supposed to mention commercial agents. However, the place is called Accent on Travel. Ted and Sylvia Blishak. Phone is: 1-800-347-0645. They can book your trip for you also. They ACTUALLY RIDE TRAINS - not typical for most travel agents.

I don't know much about Klamath Falls but I am pretty familiar with the area around Redding and Dunsmuir. Lots to see and do there and in the area. April would be a nice time to visit, too. The only downside I can see are the middle of the night arrival and departure times.

I have taken the Coast Starlight three times recently to Chemult. It is just past Klamath Falls, but very small. So most people do not like it.
I have to agree with others and recommend Dunsmuir. Although I have only seen the station, I have seen very much information proving this place to be a historical and very railroad oriented town. I would get off a few hours earlier at Dunsmuir. There are tons of hotels around the station area too! http://dunsmuir.com/

Thanks for all of the great replies. Dunsmuir does look beautiful. What a neat town! If we were going to spend a few days that would be a great spot. I am a bit leery of making that our stop just due to the schedule. We have a 6 year old and the thought of waiting all night in the station for the CS does not sound good, esp if it is typically late. Maybe we will just do one night in Klamath and return home the next day. I want to find a decent hotel within walking distance of the station. I did see one call the Maverick that seems to fit the bill, clean and cheap. More than anything were going to take this trip for the train ride, not the destination, it would have however been nice to find a spot that was worth visiting (and not at 2:00 am)

If I am not wrong, I believe the Amtrak crew stays at the Maverick as well. Klamath Falls is a crew change stop, so I know that stay somewhere in town.
