Just another quick Missouri question as I look for ideas for a larger trip in April....
I'm curious whether anyone is familiar with Jefferson City, Mo? Hotels close to the Amtrak station? Any must see sights other than the state capitol which appears to be only a block or two from the train station?
Thanks,

I'm somewhat familiar with Jeff City, but not a whole lot. The Capitol building is close to the station. Probably not more than a 5 minute walk or so.
Other than that, there isn't too much to do in Jeff City.
David, I've never been to Jefferson City but hope to stop there when I visit Kansas City and Independence some time (I had to cancel this March's trip, so I guess, some other time!) My Triple A book lists several other things to do there besides the State Capitol, though that is the highlight. For instance, you can visit JEfferson Landing State Historic Site on the river, where 3 buildings at the center of the city's 19C river trade are preserved--the 1839 Lohman Building, the 1854 Christopher Maus House, and the 1855 Union Hotel. Also on the river, you can walk on a portion of the Katy Trail State Park (which runs 200 miles from St Charles to beyond Sedalia, on the path of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas RR, parallel to the river). You can arrange a tour of the Governero's Residence, built 1871, 573-751-4141. Also of possible interest is the Safety Education Center and Law Enforcement Museum at the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 1510 E Elm, 573-751-3313; and the Missouri Veterinary Museum on Country Club Dr, 573-636-8737. (That last address sounds like it might be outside the downtown.) Self-guided walking tour maps are availalbe at the Chamber of Commerce, 213 Adams St, 573-634-3616. It sounds like some of these attractions are not open on weekends.

Thanks for the tips guys. Sojourner, I understand that the Amtrak waiting room in Jefferson City is on the ground floor of the Union Hotel building! What a pity it isn't also still a hotel.
I'm still juggling ideas for April and am torn between 'experiencing' some places such as KC, Jefferson City, and LaPlata, OR just maximizing my Guest Reward Points with a long LAX - ATL trip.
