My first LD trip coming up in a few week aboard the Silver Star, Capitol Limited and Zephyr, all from Fla. to Calif. Any advice, tips, pros and cons, etc. will be much appreciated. Thank you!

(I've been on EB, SL, CS many times, but not the above).

I did a similar trip in mid July and it was great, including making every connection.

I may have been lucky but nearly all the on-board personnel were courteous and helpful (with the possible exception of one dining car person who was just OK, but didn’t seem to be enjoying his work at all.

The Silver Star was late arriving in Jacksonville (not a surprise) and I was concerned that the dining car would close at 9:00 sharp, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was informed “my table was waiting.” An attendant in the eastbound Capitol Limited was even nicer. Upon departure from Chicago at 7:05, when I expressed concern about getting dinner reservations, she said, “Don’t worry, we’ll take care of you, that’s why we’re here.”

I would make one suggestion, and that would be to use the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles, and then connect with the Coast Starlight for the trip to San Francisco. Then you could return on the Zephyr. That’s what I did and it was a great decision.

Good luck with your planning.

Thanks for info. I'm flying back, so won't need the return trip (though I wish I could). Can't wait to go!
