Does anyone have any idea how much longer they will be using the "Big Dome" on 798/799? I assume it has something to do with equipment being sent to the NW during the Talgo problems.
We passed 799 yesterday on the way to LAX and on the way back I asked the conductor about it. He said it still looks very good inside and that it is for any passenger, not just B/C.
I'd do a quick SBA-SLO-SBA daytrip if I knew I could ride it.

Frank,
It's SUMMER In Santa Barbara.
Morning fog is part of life.
Just think... you could be at MORRO BAY!

Great Dome vice Big Dome.
The car AMTK 10031 has a Great Northern heritage and such were marketed using the trade name Great Dome.
Big Dome was a Santa Fe trade name; none of such cars were acquired by Amtrak.
I was never much the fan of any of those full length cars - that even includes my MILW's Super Domes, but nowadays, "it's all we farepayers got" .

I have no doubt that Mr. Norman is correct however when I asked about the "full length dome car" the conductor I spoke to replied using the term "Big Dome".
I still haven't had a chance to ride it and my September schedule is looking a tad busy right now. How did I ever find time to work?

The Great Domes are lovely cars but I was frustrated by the lack of forward vision they afforded. The Budd half domes were far superior in the forward vision department.

Hmm, I thought they took it off 798/799. They should have it operating for Labor Day weekend.
