It has been YEARS since I took the LSL and have been wondering what the dining status is as of 2008? Are diners back or has the diner lite / lounge been retained?

Sadly, the Heritage Diners have not yet returned on the Lake Shore Limited. Amtrak is currently running Diner Lite cars on the train, which are converted Amfleet II Lounges. Here is an interesting review of the Diner Lite service from NARP: http://www.narprail.org/cms/index.php/narpblog/dining_with_amtraks_diner_lite/ Posted by Doc Brown (Member # 4724) on :
I hope its temporary as the article states. We'll be taking the LSL at the end of April.

We were on the LSL a couple weeks ago. Had a good diner crew. As it was 48, no dinner was served into New York. Good advice to avoid the omelet. French toast was good as was the burger and pizza at lunch. If you are running late or you get hungry before the 7:30 New York arrival, best stock up in the cafe car early before they run out. The cafe car was pretty grim.
This is really a glorified am-dinette car but sadly it is probably better than the long neglected heritage diners. I thought it strange that the cook was very prominently positioned in the center of the car, but not any kind of uniform, only the ever popular tee shirt and apron. Only one end of the car was used (strangely it was the one near the coaches) and we did not notice a problem with the window position.
All eastern Amtrak trains are clearly inferior to the western trains, although the viewliner sleepers would be on par if they were maintained better.
