Is there a source that we can access to determine the current status of a train, relative to its scheduled position. For example, there is a web site where one can view live information over the Internet on the exact location of all commercial passenger aircraft so that family and friends can determine ETA's. Is there something like that for Amtrak trains? Thanks!

You can do that by calling the 1-800-USA-RAIL number as well. The automated voice (Julie) gives you an option for 'Train Status'. Just know the train number and the date you want and follow the directions. You can get an idea of when #3 is expected into Albuquerque 24 hours ahead of time.....just remember to check back as "trains can make-up or lose time en route".

(Part of Julie's spiel!)

The helpful advantage of speaking with Julie is that she tells you the ETA AND the most current location/time of the train. You can tell WHERE the train currently is. The website only tells you the status for YOUR location.

There is also a website that will show you a history of ontime performance of any Amtrak train at any station over the last 1-4 weeks: www.amtrakdelays.com

You need to know the train number and the station code (3 alpha characters) ahead of time. These codes are in the national timetable, or can be found by typing in the name on amtrak.com

The website used to say where the train currently is. Not specifically, but it would say it was "between San Jose and Oakland" or whatever. I liked it much better when we could see where it is, instead of calling Julie. My Palm Treo cell phone does not work with Julie. I've never figured out why Julie doesn't understand me on the cell phone, so I have to go online or speak to a human to get the info.

This is one of the best mapping sites for Amtrak trains.

Thank you Henry. I apologize if my earlier response came across as a bit flippant. The site you list is marvelous.

Henry, thanks for that link. I didn't know such existed.

Now, I don't want too sound greedy, but what would be cool is a Windows Vista sidebar gadget that would provide train status in similar fashion. Similar gadgets are available for flight info.

Likewise.

What a neat site. I have it bookmarked in my 'Amtrak' folder now.

Wow Henry that is indeed a great site. I am sitting in King Street Station waiting to board the #11. Alaska cruise was great. Will report in on my trip to LAX.

Frank in SBA, we shall be there tomorrow. Looking for you!
