Do they have rental lockers? Are they big enough to store luggage? Will they store luggage at the train station for the day? Thanks!

They do not have rental lockers at Union Station in Los Angeles.
However, they do have a baggage area and I'm pretty sure that they will take your bag for the day as long as you're a ticketed passenger. Can someone confirm for me if I've got that right? I've never done it, but I think I've heard of others doing it.

Not sure if it's still the same, but I stored my luggage at LA Union Station for several hours about 2-1/2 years ago. I arrived very early from San Diego and was not catching my sleeper till much later, so I went on a lovely walk etc etc. . . . I think the fee was $2 a bag, but it may have been a little more. I recall that even though I had a sleeper later that day, I still had to pay a fee (in Chicago, NYC, Washington DC, Philly, etc, if you have a sleeper, there is no fee to store your luggage). It was a luggage room with attendant; he was sometimes busy elsewhere, so you may have to nose around. But anyway, when I was leaving, I got a red cap to put me on the train, and he told me I should have seen him before I stored the luggage; I think he'd have stored my luggage for free because I had a sleeper (except for the tip, of course, but I gave him one anyway!) So, my advice is . . . check with a red cap first!

As of last summer when my wife & I took our trip, yes we were able to store our luggage in the baggage area at L.A. Station for an hour or so while we went to Phillipe's for berakfast. The charge was $2/bag I believe.

So how was breakfast! In all the years I've been going to Philippe I've never had breakfast there. Or dinner either, for that matter. The "Lamb Double Dip" always seems to call out to me.

Luggage can be stored in a room off of the baggage claim area (near the bus area). Believe it is a $2 or $3 per bag charge. Also believe for ticketed passengers only. Have made use of each time have been there. Word of caution - allow plenty of time before train departure to pick up luggage. Attendant does take meals and breaks and it seems there is no coverage while he is gone. I would ask his schedule when checking bags in.

French Dip for breakfast? What a man? Seriously, how was breakfast. Only time I was there early AM, I just had coffee. But, the place was packed. Looked like a lot of people getting off work from the nearby flower and produce markets.

No, we didn't have french dip for breakfast!!!!! I think my wife & I just had plain ol' ordinary eggs, but they were good!!!! Most things at Phillipe's are good!!

It's funny, but right after my last post they had a short segment about Philippe's ("Official" name is Philippe The Original). It was about their recently celebrated 100th anniversary. They serve over 20,000 sandwiches a week!
Breakfast is on my list and so is dinner. I'd bet the meatloaf is good.
One thing I've always liked about the place is the cross section of clientele. When I was on Federal Jury Duty a few years ago most of the courthouse would show up there for lunch or at one of the stalls on Olvera Street. If we had an unusually long break we'd head to Empress Pavilion for dim sum.
To get this back on topic, my experience with checked luggage has been the same as reported above. I think your best bet is to find a Red Cap. They will usually "mind" your bags for the price of a tip and get it on board for you, too.
