I don't know if the economy will allow me another trip next year, but so far I am keeping my fingers crossed and planning a return to the CA Zephyr, this time hopefully without the flooding, so I can get to Cheyenne. I then plan to go to Glenwood Springs and Reno (from where I will visit Carson City). I hope to stay 2 nights in Glenwood Springs and plan to take the bus to and from Aspen on my full day, just to see Aspen. Does anyone have a good rec for a fairly inexpensive but convenient and safe hotel in Glenwood Springs? I know the Hotel Denver is right near the train station; how would that be? Or would I be better off at the Hampton Inn on 1st? Also, anyone know anything about taking the public bus from GS to Aspen? It seems pretty straightforward, but any input is much obliged. Thanks!

As I noted at another topic I am going to recommend The Hotel Denver in Glenwood Springs. While I have not stayed there, I did have a Lunch at their restaurant during 2K and was shown one of their railroad motif guest rooms.

The property is directly opposite the Amtrak station.

Sojourner: I seem to be in the business of providing local information for the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado, which I am pleased and honored to do!!

Glenwood Springs has both a chamber resort association (970-945-6589) and a separate central reservation company (888-445-3696). The chamber resort association can quote rates but can't make reservations. I suggest trying them both.

The Hampton Inn (and next door Holiday Inn Express) are quite a distance from the station. I don't know if they have shuttle pickup, but the Hampton Inn central reservation office ought to be able to tell you. Mr. Kisor stays at the Hot Springs Lodge which is accessed by a bridge which crosses both the interstate and the Colorado River. If you are interested in the hot springs pool, that would be the best location.

There is a circulating bus around Glenwood Springs that is extremely handy. Google "Glenwood Springs CO" and it will give you their schedule.

The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (known as "Rafta") runs hourly between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, with stops at many locations in both towns. They also have a website, and are extremely dependable. While driving time between the two towns is 45-60 minutes, the buses take longer as they make many stops. But since parking in Aspen is limited and prohibitive, you would definitely want to use the buses.

As a resort town, Glenwood Springs has a plethora of lodging of all types. However, access to transportation is an important factor and you should probably ask about that.
