My friend who is currently on a big Amtrip (see my report of a fire in the diner on his Capitol Limited) reports the following negative events on his WB CZ 5(14):
1. The light in his deluxe bedroom's bathroom/shower does not work...it left Chicago that way and a new bulb inserted in enver did not remedy this.
2. His Superliner II sleeper is too hot...76 degreees at its best until a COACH attendant pressed the reset button and cooled it to upper 50s. Now it is either too hot or too cold.
3. The diner a/c is very poor.
4. The train was held up at Grand Jct. by tie replacement work for about 3 hours...there was no estimate of how long the delay would be.
5. Toilets in his sleeper totally failed starting at Denver and got worse as happens often at higher elevation.

This is not a picky guy...he is a railfan and is actually often overly tolerant of bad things. But the mechanical issues are absolutely absurd.

I have to slightly laugh as we had one Sleeper on Train #5/#6 last year over this same section that constantly failed no matter how hard the attendant tried to keep it working. Makes you wonder if it's the same car...

In February on the Empire Builder east bound none of the toilets worked after Whitefish but they were restored to working order in Minot. A few years ago on the EB west bound I was in a sleeper that had A/C problems with a Bedroom--they were either too HOT in the Bedroom or the rest of the car was too cold. It appears to me that this is an design problem because I've seen it first hand on a number of different routes. I have found that some seats in the Diner are very cold while the person across from you is just fine. Travel is always an adventure and Amtrak equipment sure adds to that.
