Quick notice here, the DW and I are planning to take the surfliner to SAN tomorrow to watch the Cubs beat the Padres but we need help with a hotel thats less than $200 a night and near the stadium or the trolley taking us to the stadium.

Less than $200/night in San Diego on Memorial Day weekend? Good luck! I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone comes up with an idea, but I sure don't have any. But if you want to splurge, the gorgeous Omni Hotel is located next-door to PETCO Park. Half of their rooms look right out into the ballpark and you can watch the game from your room. Maybe check Priceline or something to see if you can get a good deal, but being a busy weekend in an extremely popular city for tourists, I kinda doubt it.

I'll second that! You'd be amazed at how many Cubs fans are around San Diego, or the world for that matter! Though I'm a Dodger fan mainly, I root for the Cubs whan they play the Pads. But good luck in your hotel search- cubzo...what's "DW?" Divorced Wife?

La Pensione. http://www.lapensionehotel.com/ It's in Little Italy and it looks like they have a room tomorrow and Monday for $90. I have stayed there more than once and I like it. John

So, how long do you plan to stay??? Until Cubs beat Padres, or just this weekend??

Thank all for the suggestions and responses. We took the Surfliner and took in the game but didn't stay the night. Baseball and train travel, what a great American way to spend the Memorial day weekend.

I'm glad it all worked out in the end.
I'm curious---how large was the crowd on the Surfliner after the game? Was it standing room only? Thanks.

We went business class, first train down and last train back. Both ways the car was virtually empty. I am reminded of a Green Bay Packer game that the DW and I traveled on Amtrak to San Diego. The train was standing room only and the Packer fans drank the train dry before we arrived in Fullerton.

Okay, thanks. I'm assuming the first train or two after the game was quite crowded. Taking the last train was a good idea. And it reminds me of one of my all-time favorite tunes:

That's because San Diego is the only NFL city in Southern California. We get cheesehead, out of towners and LA residents who root for visiting teams. And the train is a great way to get to either stadium.
