Southern Montana Service

According to this article, the possibilty of using the ex NP line from Logan to Butte is being considered. If that is the case, what is the state of this line? Is it intact throughout, missing in places, paved over anywhere?

According to wikipedia, homestake pass was last used by BNSF in 1983. How much work is it going to take to get this portion of the line back in shape, assuming this plan ever sees the light of day?

I know it's unlikely, but If this has even the slightest chance of ever happening then I have to support it.

What in the world is in Logan that requires passenger rail?

I drove through that area in 2002. The tracks were still in place but it looked like there would be much work needed to shore up the roadbed before it could be used again.......sporadic washouts near the top if I recall correctly.

logan would get service as it's west of Bozeman and Billings. Question would be why go thru Butte when the state capitol Helena is west of logan on a different route and that would bypass Butte.

And important to note that the route through Helena is.....um......still in service. There would be considerably fewer startup dollars needed to run via Helena instead of Butte.
