I always book far in advance to get the lowest fare and when I was checking on a trip in November I found I could not find a CZ Roomette for less than $552 all the way into January 2011. I discovered a rate increase by accident. I booked a Roomette Eugene to Sacramento in May and a week later (when I found out when I was returning) I booked the return and found about a 2% fare hike. Roomette was the same but Coach was higher. Why doesn't Amtrak announce increases?

Why should they?

Like the airlines, Amtrak rates and services are unregulated. Whether booking by web orphone, a passenger knows what will be the tab before saying "I do".

Yes you are right, it is not like going down to the bus stop with exact change and finding out the fare went up.
