I took an excellent trip on the Sunset Limited in March and April 1999. I went from Tucson to Jacksonville, and back. I took several pictures with a film camera. I finally have had the time to scan many of these photographs. I am creating an album with photographs and information about my trip. (By the way, I met my girl friend for the first time in Jacksonville. We have now been happily married for almost eleven years.)
There are five pictures that I do not know where they were taken from. I have posted these five pictures on a website (They are the only pictures posted, so they are easy to find). Please look at these, and let me know where they were taken from. I have indicated my best guess as to what they are showing.

Would the 4th one, "westbound, east of New Orleans", have been taken from the causeway crossing of Lake Pontchartrain, shortly before arriving into NO?

Thank you for responding.
I think the fourth photograph would have been taken farther east than Lake Pontchartrain. I know it was taken before photograph 5. The photographs are shown in the order they were taken. If number 5 is just east of Biloxi (and I am not real sure it is), then number 4 would be farther east of Biloxi.

I am not sure what is wrong. You should be able to just click on the link above. There will be a "log in" in the upper right, but you do not need to log in. My pictures are about the middle of the screen. All you have to do is click on them. I am not a computer whiz and I do not understand most of the computer terminology. Maybe you need Adobe flashplayer to view them and my computer had it already.

Thinking logically, you were on the train in April so sunrise would have been about 6:30am, so Biloxi would have been just getting light if the train was on time. In any case, east of Biloxi and even more so east of Mobile the route is inland. That leaves only two significant water body crossings before New Orleans: just east of Biloxi (so, guessing #4), and just east of Bay St. Louis (#5). Both adjacent road bridges were destroyed by the hurricane and so look very different now.
I was mistaken on the Lake Pontchartrain crossing - that route is taken by the Crescent, albeit only a few miles away. The other water crossings have no road bridges nearby.
I found you need to double-click on the album photo to get the five pictures to show, then a single click to view each individually. It does use Adobe flashplayer though.

The 3rd picture is taken from the KCS bridge over the Neches River. The tall white building is HQ to Entergy-Texas and the smaller building is AT&T. Had you taken the picture on the other side, you would see the northern tip of the 4th largest U.S. port and Worlds 2nd largest military port.

Thank you for picture 3 information. when I look on Google Earth where you mentioned, I see the same building.
Might picture 4 be just east of Pensacola crossing Escambia Bay? There is quite a bit more fog than picture 5, possibly indicating it was taken quite a bit earlier than picture 5.

Thank you for all of your help. Jeff, when I look on Google Maps, it appears you are correct. Thank you for Photograph 2 information. The only photograph I do not know now is number one. Ironically, this is the one I thought would be easiest to identify. I thought it might be Lordsburg, but I am not sure.

Photo 1 looks like west Texas, possibly Marfa or maybe Alpine or Sanderson.
