Flying to CT and NY with my kids for spring break and then we'll take the LSL and Zephyr back. My 8 year old's first overnight. Bedrooms on both legs.
I had wanted to take the train both ways but schedules got us in to NY to late to then get myself and 2 kids on trains up to Guilford at a comfortable hour.
And flying in gives us more time with my sister, this first family gathering after my mother died. We may sprinkle some ashes at Coney Island - at the beach and near the Nathan's Hot Dog stand, and along the boardwalk. This'll be Mom's first trip back to Brooklyn in a lot of years.

Ira -
I hope that the trip is wonderful in every regard and am glad that taking the train even one way is an option.

Enjoy your trip - Guilford (my home since 1999) is a beautiful old town - with good Shore Line East rail service. If timing works out, you might want to visit Essex - actually drive a steam locomotive (weekends April 1-3 and 8-10) pricey, but a once in a lifetime experience.

Thanks David. I agree, good to train evn if only one way. My daughter is already looking at the schedules and distances and a map.
And thanks navybanker for the locomotive driving info. I will check that out. As you say - even if pricey, a 'bucket list' item.

Have a wonderful trip, Ira. With the time change, it should be light for your trip up the Hudson, the prettiest part of the LSL IMO. But you'll have plenty of gorgeous scenery on the Zephyr.
I hear very good things about Brooklyn, lots of neighborhoods closer to Manhattan very trendy now (Williamsburgh, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook). I have to get over there some time. We did once do a very nice walking tour of Park Slope and another time of Brooklyn Heights, great views of Manhattan from there too.
Metro North to CT has new trains too; I haven't seen them.
