The north-bound VIA passenger train, Maple Leaf, which crossed the border at Niagara Falls, derailed Sunday afternoon killing two locomotive engineers and a trainee. 45 passengers out of about 75 were injured. Cause of the derailment unknown. I just feel awful about the loss of life.

Oh no. I had not heard about this. Is this the train that is a joint venture between Amtrak and VIA?

My heart and prayers go out to the families of the dead and injured.
The equipment involved appears to be an F-40 locomotive and LRC cars. There is no Amtrak equipment involved.
The incident does NOT appear to be Grade-Xing related; I'm certain reportage would have established such if it were the case.
So if not Grade Xing, then what? While I'm not about to disdain the Canadian transportation safety investigative agency, about which I know nothing, it is safe to say they are not the NTSB, which is deemed to be the best in the business. Since agencies are very "protective" of their jurisdiction, I would think it a "stretch" to have the NTSB participate in any capacity. Even if there were a US Citizen aboard, that is not grounds for a US agency to have standing, unless specifically "invited" by the lead agency.

This was VIA Train #92…..a weekend only afternoon train between Niagara Falls and Toronto. NOT #98 the Maple Leaf which uses Amtrak equipment. The Maple Leaf wasn’t even in Canada yet when this accident occurred.

The TSB will conduct this investigation just as well as any other agency.....thank you very much!
