I would welcome suggestions for a pleasant day- outing on the LIRR, starting from and returning to Penn Station, departure time around 9.00am, but we can be flexible. We will be in New York between July 9th and 14th.It is not an area we know but like both country and coastal scenery and are prepared to walk.

Pretty sure you can book a same-day round trip from NY (Penn Station) to Montauk and return, the longest point-to-point run on the LIRR. With luck, one trip will be routed over the Montauk branch east of Jamaica, and the other over the Central branch for a little diversity. I believe there are some nice eateries a short cab ride away on the east end.

I always enjoyed the trip out to Port Jefferson on the LIRR. It's about a two hour ride, with a change of trains, usually in Huntington. From the Port Jeff Station, it's a easy 1 mile downhill walk (on a sidewalk) to the harbor, which has several restaurants, lots of shops, and boats galore. From there, you can either retrace your steps, or for a little longer trip, take the Ferry across Long Island Sound to Bridgeprt, where you can get the Metro North Railroad back to NYC (GCT). You could also get Amtrak from BRP to Penn Station, but that runs less frequently, and is more expensive. The ferry dock in Bridgeport is right next to the train station.

Long Island Railway (MTA) has a wide variety of escorted, overnight, AND discounted independent day trip deals, such as this beach one I took several years ago:
