From the linked Associated Press material, courtesy Raleigh News & Observer, it does not appear the incident is all that serious. I highly doubt if two Viewliner Sleepers, apparently on rear, will need to be written off, although maybe those two will be the first candidates to be reconfigured to that of the V-II's, if in fact that program will move forth:
Seven of the nine cars on Train 20 from New Orleans went off the track but stayed upright, Amtrak said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. It said it had no immediate word on the cause as investigators from several agencies and work crews converged at the site.Spartanburg County Deputy Fire Marshal Tony Barnett told AP by telephone that the cars had derailed. But Amtrak in its later email said only that the train had become disabled when the seven affected cars lost contact with the tracks.
From the captioned material, it would appear that Dr. Goebbels has educated the spokesmen in some kind of 'Amspeak' taken from the airline's playbook. Oh, and on 'airlinespeak', there appears to be quite a glossary within this book that I bought last Summer, but so far went into the penalty box about half way through. It ran out of gas with me when I realized, as one who only goes on about four flights a year, what is it telling me that I don't already know about air transport?

So 'losing contact with the tracks' is less bad than a derailment?

How about if the wheels had a track phobia?

Or if the wheels and the track had diverging opinions.

I am taking train 98 from WPB to WAS leaving this Wed 27th arriving Thurs morning in WAS. Scheduled to then take train 19 Thurs at 6:30pm to NOL. Have a bedroom booked. Think things will be back to normal schedule by then or should I be looking into alternate plans? Thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I would expec the track to be back in service in a matter of hours. how long before Amtrak gets its equipment locations unscrambled is another story, but sure it could be managed by Thursday.
