Ocala Mike: I spent two years in northern Florida some decades ago, and one Christmas it was 80 degrees, and on the other it was an unbelievable 20 degrees! Brrr!!!

Yes, Margaret, in 1989 right around this time (a few days before Christmas), it hit 19 degrees in Ocala, and there was a dusting of snow visible on the roads. That particular cold spell devastated the citrus industry around here, and basically moved the "no-frost" zone many miles to the south.

M & M; I too remember Xmas 1989. I was driving down to visit with my Father in Lighthouse Point. I recall on the 295 around Jax the most amateur sanding operation going on over the St John's R. A dump truck was driving along slowly and two guys in the back were manually throwing sand on to the pavement. Then to the South of Jax where 295 and 95 converge, there was a massive traffic jam caused when the FHP were only going to allow a certain number of vehicles to enter 95. Since back then, I was the only kid in the traffic jam with a (cell) carphone, my Father got updates. I even allowed someone to use it who was panicking because her Mother would be worried.
1983 was also another 'cold one down below'.

My little corner is seeing a full week of balmy mid-70 degree days, with nights dropping to (shiver-) 45-48. That's the payoff for the brutally hot summers we usually endure. We decorate the houses and put twinkling lights on the palm trees, but doesn't really have that classic 'Christmasy' feel. Season's Greetings to all, and let's hope for a peaceful 2014...
