That story made even the local news here yesterday, as well as national news.

It was the leading headline on my Yahoo news home page, which rarely has anything of value or interest other than the usual rubbish they think is newsworthy.

The railroad has identified the TRESPAASERS because of their automobile license plate and will press charges for trespass. Lets hope they are appropriately PUNISHED.

And for the ambulance chasers who would take this situation to sue the RR lets hope they and their clients " lose their collective -sses .

I really feel for the engineer and anybody else up front in these situations. The morons only survived due to dumb luck.

I was just talking to a driver in the UK today who had a "one under" (suicide in this case) and it really messed him up. Today also there was a story in the news about somebody who threw themselves in front of a train, at a busy passenger station - and managed to send three people to hospital in the process of being - how do I put this subtly - smashed to pieces by the train. Thoughtless.

There was a book written quite a few years ago by Florida's forensic anthropologist in which among many other things he talked some about suicides. It seems that Florida has a fairly high rate of suicide among the elderly which he ascribed to "retire to Florida" going wrong. In it he described suicide as the among the most selfish of acts. He said of the gun suicides many were done with guns bought for that purpose, usually with a credit card, which gave you two things, about the messiest form of suicide other than throwing yourself in front of a train and leaving paying for the tool up to someone else. In one example not in his book the person did it sitting in a "friend's" car.

Suicide is a rather complex psychological phenomenon, and the nuances of it can be discussed intelligently ad infinitum. The instant story of these two women, however, is about stupidity, a far more prosaic feature, alas, of far too many members of the human race.

Curious as to what the penalty for trespassing is?
Hope it is costly !!!

Sadly, probably not

"Trespassing on railroad property is usually a misdemeanor, with penalties ranging from $100 to $1,000, and some jail time, depending on the state.

Two WERE killed trespassing at about MP 6 on the BNSF last evening - and making a mess of last nights - and even into this morning account Hours of Service, METRA service.

The incident involved BNSF #1272 - one that I seem to ride when going into town for the evening, as it is non-stop after La Grange.

I care not how strong one's religious faith may be, but Charles Darwin did have some points to consider.

Quite a confusing story, mixing up present and past tense in the reporting. Then, to cap it all, it ends with "This is also the sight of a deadly accident two years ago where a driver tried to cross the gates."
