We will be taking the Southwest Chief (departing @ 3:00 pm) out of Chicago this winter. We arriving in Chicago for the SWC connection via either the Saluki arriving @1:00 pm or City of New Orleans, arriving @9:00 a.m. We would be boarding either train about 5 hours earlier. Any experiences with this connection? The Saluki would be great as it avoids a long layover. However, do not want to miss the departure of the SWC if running Saluki is running late.

Mr.Fan, it appears the only guaranteed connection is 58-CHI-3,therefore,in order to ensure Amtrak will "take care of you" in the case of a misconnect is "up and Adam" at your point of origin. Using 390, Saluki, means you are "on your own". If you are traveling Coach, you might be willing to take a chance, but if Sleeper, just too much to lose.
