I am skeptical that this would actually save lives, given that most people going around the barriers are fully aware that they are there, and those that aren't aware probably shouldn't be driving anyway and will take no notice of any GPS they might have. But hey, if it saves one life then it's worth it.

So where did the terms Grade Crossing and Train Orders come rom.
I am guessing grade crossing is becasue it is at th same level as the road, rather than a bridge over or under the tracks.
And of course Casey Jones mounted to the cabin "with his orders in his hand...." But is is that someone ordered the train...

"An at-grade intersection is a junction at which two or more transport axes cross at the same level (or grade)." - Wikipedia. Were they originally called "at-grade crossings"?
Obviously I "translated" from British English for the thread title. Sat[ellite]Nav[igation] being something that tells you where to go; GPS being something that tells you where you are and have been. Level crossing = grade crossing.

At this time, the GPS I use (Waze) is not prepared to denote railroad grade crossings. It's in future plans, but not present plans.
