quote:Norfolk Southern Railway and the city discovered a problem that went unnoticed since 2007 when council changed Silver, formerly one-way westbound, to a two-way street.
City Manager Scott Andrejchak said eastbound motorists don’t see the flashing red lights that are on the other side of the intersection to warn westbound travelers of the approach of a train.
Low speed crossing but surprising how nobody has noticed this for 8 years!

It is surprising that there were no collisions in 8 years.
The news item brought back memories of my 5th grade class. We had student crosswalk patrols, complete with red cloth stop signs attached to a bamboo pole. The main student crosswalk ran parallel to the main street of town. But, at a right angle to that crosswalk was a crosswalk across main street. At that time, we had one of the few towns, left in the state, with a railroad track (for freight trains) running down the middle of main street. I always wanted to run the stop sign when a train was coming down the street. I don't know if the train would stop, but no train ever came down the track when I was on patrol.
