Well, NJ Transit's been busy sticking pages about capital projects on its (relatively new) website. This one, http://www.njtransit.com/an_capitalprojects_project071.shtm , details the reconstruction of the former DL&W Broad Street Station in Newark. Much of what I suspected would transpire is on this page, namely the planned construction of a center island platform, along with the reconstruction of the bridges over Broad Street and Martin Luther King Blvd to accommodate (I presume) the relocation of the third track. Good thing too, since this will make transfers easier than they are now (usually involving the connecting train stopping on the center track, requiring passengers to cross the track adjacent to the platform). Well...certainly promising, and here's hoping that funds are already in place to get things going...also, here's hoping that the construction of the new island platform isn't disruptive to the station as a historical landmark...

This is interesting. I cannot figure out if they are going to keep all three tracks in the station. Mention is made of a new center platform and a new eastbound platform. If all three tracks are retained will the center platform be between tracks 1&3, or 1&2?

$54,000,000 (Rough Estimate for design funding) and Construction funding is to be determined. This will most likely go up as the project begins (as with most NJT projects). How is a financially starved NJT going to come up with that kind of cash?

This project will begin after the Montclair Connection begins (if it doesn't get pushed back again). What kind of effect will this have on passenger using the station. Sending Boonton Line trains into what could be a major bottleneck is not very smart. Will the Bergen Tunnel Construction be completed by the time this begins? Perhaps NJT should keep the Glen Ridge-Arlington-Hoboken section of the Boonton Line active until this project is completed?
