Hi there, im not a rail enthusiast or anything, but recently while I was helping dig out somebody's garden, I dug up what I think is an old train or truck ID plate. (They live next to a railway line running from Stafford through Penkridge in England, UK)

The plate has written on it "GENLY REPAIRED BY W. R. LTD. NBR 25385 7-1944"

I'm guessing that it has come from a train that has been repaired by a company called W R Ltd sometime in 1944 (perhaps July??)
Im also guessing that the number is either the train number, or a job number.

Im interested in finding out all I can about this train, what sort it was, where it came from, etc and also about finding the company "W. R. Ltd" out.

Can anybody guide me as to where I can start?

Thanks.

Try the NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM in York, they should have the resources.
