Can anyone tell me what the letters on coal hoppers stand for? I know there is 4 letters, and they end with the letter X. I am trying gain my knowledge what comes through my home town.

The letters are called "reporting marks" and are the identification of the company that owns the cars. Those ending in an X are of companies that that own cars but don't operate rail, mostly lease fleets.
