As far as the future of class 1 railroads, which of the folowing do you think will be the strongest company in the years to come: CSX NS UP, or BNSF? Oh yea, I'm from Tullahoma,TN and I just want to know if any one is from around here.

While my heart will go with the NS, I think maby CSX has a better chance.....Mike....PS anyone like to work on a steamer ????

I would guess UP due to its size.

I'm not familiar with Tullahoma but visited the Knoxville-Chattanooga area 3 years ago. The NS (ex-Southern) line through that area is signaled, and sometimes the single-track line signals would show green in both directions at the time. Is that the norm for that system? I never see that out here (Southern Cal)

I am from Illinois, and would like to CSX or NS have a chance to compete against UP or BNSF. Ever since BNSF tried to merge with CN, I think BNSF were over their heads. In fact the highest court in the land put a moratorium on that merger. So I am for equal competition.

I have no doubt the BNSF will come out as one of the big ones in the future. They had almost no trouble in the BN/SF merger as opposed to the meltdown the YOU PEE had. CSX & NS also had & are still having major problems with the take over of Conrail. The BNSF is also AMTRAK friendly which makes them OK in my book. Yours Reggie

If UP gets ir's act together, it could be tops, but I rather hope for BNSF!

I am from south central Kentucky. I think it will come down to the BNSF in the west and the CSX in the east.

It will be UP in the west. If the are not shut down by bankruptcy. Before the merger scene looked obique anyway. everyone was expecting the NS to merge with the BNSF with BNSF disolving into the NS. UP would counter this monuver with buying CSX. Nobody expected BNSF with CN.

In fact this merger should have went though. But the STB was protecting its baby UP. Come on everybody lets think about it. This merger would have created the nations largest railroad. Both companies (BNSF and CN) would be no more The parent company would hve been North American Railway. I don't see any of the previous railroads listed. NEW company with old management. With the reputation of UP and the other railroad leaders that think they can run a railroads by ousting its former managment that ran the railroad. Am I the only one that find a problem here. Under the contract for the new company NAR. The managment stayed the headquaters in Fort Worth,Tx. I don't see why BNSF and CN have to pay for the other railroads incompetentcy. You know what I am talking about. Lets see we want to make money from the start. So lets cut or payoff the Companies employees were going to take over. My point WHO IS GOING TO RUN THE RAILROAD. You can not take the staff you have and expect them to run that companies tracks. Thats like me droping you off in an desert and expecting you to get back home. After a time you will but until then you are wondering around like an idiot.

The NAR was going to keep them two companies until everything was talking on the page. They did this for ATSF and BN. Same priciples applied here folks. They kept there railroad running (might have been slowly) But they kept it running. You did not massive amounts of trains backlogged and waiting for days to get in there yards. UP and the rest of them did. They shut there railroad down. Now there customers have run by the bushel loads to BNSF and UP will never recover there losses. OH By the way BNSF is on time. UP is still three months behind. and we are a year after the merger.
