I just want to know exactly what a slug is and what it is used for.

A slug is not a locomotive - usually just a low body w/ weight on a frame to carry trucks w/ traction motors. It gets its power from a "mother" loco. If the mother has 6 axles then the slug also will have 6. Thus the set has 12 axles to pull/push a cut of cars especially in hump yards. Of course CSX has a slug set w/ cabs on both to be used on road frieghts/switchers
