Can anyone here explain to be what the definition of "extra board". New hires at train service seem to be relegated to the extra board, and I am having trouble figuring out just what this is.

If you work fo rthe "extra board", do you get a set minimum salary? Is there a set work schedule?

Here is the way I understand it. Train crew employees "bid" for trains that have a crew opening in their job capacity. They are awarded these positions based on seniority in service and other factors. If you are not chosen or their are not positions available you can post on the "Extra" board which means you will be given the next available train that has a position you are qualified for in order behind the employees that have already posted. The FSTB, FRA (back in the steam days the USRA) and the RR Unions also had various regulations dealing with who gets "called". At least this is how I understand it. If I'm way off base I'd apreciate more info from anyone else out there.
