Has anyone read 'Empire Express' by David Haward Bain? The book is about the building of the first transcontinental railroad, and the important people behind the railroad. In my opinion, this book is like a Ken Burns tv documentry only in words. I like to know if there are any readers in this forum, and would like to share some comentary on this work.

I agree it is a great work, and far superior to Ambrose' concurrent attempt.
BTW, I picked up a nice complimentary piece at the Roseville Historical Museum in the form of a reproduction of the defense of the Big Four before the Pacific RR Commission, summing up their efforts and questionable treatment by the U.S. Gov't. in various matters
