Can anyone tell me what the "Codes" on HO track mean???

It is hight of the rail(mesured in .001 inches) from the flange that rests on the wood/plastic tie's to the top of the rail. Code 100(.100")is used for the heavyest main line(rare in real life). Code 83(.083")for typical main line. Code 70 (.070")is for secondary route's and siding's. They are used togeter at cetain point's(a siding or sper line coming of the main line would change from 83 to 70 in a proto-typical layout). Not all loco's and rolling stock can handle the lower code's as the flange on the wheel's are too high and cause the train to ride on the tie's causing ALL KIND's of GRIEF. Hope this is clear.

The best advice I can give you(untill someone that knows more than I)is to stay with either all code 100(prefered untill you have more experiance)or code 83.There is much more track item's for C-100 avalable to you(turnout's,3' Flextrack,Crossing's,etc). Before you get too far,you should read"Basic Model Railroading" by Kalmback publishing.
