Members: I am relatively, new to this forum and I would like to get to know some of you, better. So, why not let everyone know just exactly, what railroad you model, it's size, scale, DCC or Cab, how long you have been working on your layout, etc. I think this will be a good way to know more about us, all. Maybe, you could let us know, where you are located. I am in, North Carolina, I model HO. I have four-indivdual main-lines, so I can run, 4 trains at one time. My layout, measures:18'X 13'. I use hand-held-walkaround controls. I model, Southern RR; SP; SF; Erie; Pennsy; Erie-Lackawanna;etc.( I've got too-many to list, my wife may read this, and start asking-$$$$$, questions, AGAIN!), So, what do you say, Let's get to know each-other, better! Thanks. ......Richard

Well,
I have two...neither of which I currently model !! First is the Colorado and Midland around the turn of the century (I have a great layout all mapped out for this one !!) and second is the Colorado and Southern, again around the turn of the century (and don't those Bachmann 0n30 sets look great !!). Currently my 4-year-old and I are building an N scale layout based on the Santa Fe in New Mexico . Although not my favorite, it made a lot of sense to model this area. It will be set in the late 50's early 60's and run both diesel and steam. And don't get me wrong, I'm having a blast just doing the research for this one (it will be my first non-freelanced railroad!!). Happy Modeling!!

Santa is bringing my daughter, age 12, and I an HO train for xmas. We live in Carnation, WA, near Seattle. I am planning to build a layout approx. 10'x10'. I will be my own railroad, probably a Northwest scene.

Up till now, we have been setting up my American Flyer, vintage 1950s, every year at xmas and my daughter has really enjoyed it. I'm moving to HO because so much more stuff is available.

I will have lots of questions.

Hey Rich,
I do something that most people dont do. I model the Frisco (SLSF) in present day. I like to take a modern, high horsepower locomotive and paint it in their colors. Being a fallen flag I get to pick the motive power and type of freight they deal with. today. My layout is around the room (13x15), above the top of the door frames. It starts in Mobile, AL and runs to Satsuma, AL. Most of the trains are intermodal and unit coal. Both are types of trains the Frisco never had a chance to run. If you have a favorite RR and it has fallen let me suggest this type of modeling.

Favorite Railroad(s) - CSX, Amtrak
I Model - CSX, Amtrak
Scale - HO

I am stockpiling equipment (I live in an apartment) for a future basement layout of CSX's Baltimore Service Lane, from Rosedale, Md. to Brunswick, Md., maybe all the way to Cumberland, depending on space. The beauty of this is that I also get to model Amtrak, as the Northeast Corridor parallels CSX for a while into Baltimore, coming from Philly.

I model O guage and On3. O guage for traction, and On3, as in the original stuff, not the new Bachman On30. I have a quite a few kits, some built and some still in boxes. I have even scratch built some models. On3 is a great scale to detail and work with. I used to joke about the "ham handers" in O guage, now I am one.

I, like many, have put off modeling for a number of years due to family. I am now ready and have the space to build an operating layout. I am in the process of designing a modular set up so I can move and change as needed. My bigest problem of the moment is what radius to use for the On3. The next biggest is to plan what theme (I am being specific here, as in what industry, or region would be best to work in both On3 and Oguage traction. In fact, I would love to run some HO in the background (as in perspective for distance). That is a very long term goal.

Short term, is the first four or sixt modules. By the way my rolling stock is midwest and western. Traction is Midwest.

Good topic!

Richard,
Up here in the Rockies, I model the D&RGW-the Pueblo/Leadville division,1939. I've been in the hobby about 15 years and this is my 4th layout. Been working on the current one for about five years (although you probably couldn't tell by looking). Used to Model alot of Mo Pac so have a fair amount of interchange with them. I love steam and do enjoy some of the early deisel.
Researching the prototype is one of my favorite parts of the hobby, although I do take a fair amount of "modelers license" on my layout--after all(Rule 1)it's my Rail Road! Structures, scenery and backdrop painting are also a lot of fun. I do get tired of balasting track and wireing to me these are necessary "evils" of the hobby. I do have a good ballasting system worked out and balasting does make the track "bomb proof". Spose youl'd call me an "old hat", I'm still with a block system of wireing and am happy with it.
I built my house up here so I had the privalage of designing the basement around the layout. Even though there were concessions to be made for the "Head Office".
The only thing I miss from living "down below" is there arn't many modeleres in my area, so this forum gives me a good opportunity ti visit with other GERF's (GLASSY EYED RAIL FREAKS). Am always happy to throw in my two cents worth (usually this is an inflated actual value) on most of the questions posted and am always glad to see another "newbie".
Have a good one, nice to meet ya!

My Railroad is 1/24 scale, outdoors, 110X76 feet. The Engines all have Aristo TE /RC and Gel-Cell batteries in them, So no problems with shorts, bad conections, or dirty track. I model along the lines of the Carson & Colorado RR, which used track not far from my house. My own line, 'Desert Springs & Rattler Gap' set in 1880's to 1900 time period, all Steam. So far I have 500 feet of main line, and 11 scratch built stub switches. I run my trains with real opperation type rules. I run trains in all weather, as long as I don't get to cold doing so. Plowing snow off the RR is fun, I use a scratch built wedge plow.

Well I am from Indiana, I model in HO, currently (due to space limitations, my office is now working as a computer room and layout room). I model the Muncie & Western a real railroad back in the days of Ball Brothers "Glass Jar Company" They owned and operated the M&W up until the 1970's.
My layout is 2'deep and 10'long. I have block wiring, with walk around MRC Throttle.
My next layout will have to wait a few more years, but it will be huge.!
You can take a look at my layout, will take time to load (I didn't make Thumbnails) Took them with my digital, so the pics might not be great.! Feedback is always welcome.!

Scale: HO
Railroads: Indiana & Ohio, CSX, Grand Trunk Western

I currently am working on a 4x8 switching layout that will be a branchline of my freelance regional railroad called the Alleghany & Ohio. I also have CSX, NS, Conrail (and soon Grand Trunk Western), Indiana & Ohio, and New England Central locos to run it as a branch of one of those roads, and also have B&O, Southern, and PRR diesels to run the layout in the older days as a branch of one of those roads.

Hey everyone, My name is Gary and I live in NY, I am a former owner of Lionel but sold a considerable collection some years ago using the cash for a down payment on a house. The house of course has a basement and plans are underway for an HO layout. It will be an early to mid 50's running both diesel and steam. I will probally have alot of questions, some fairly basic, for now I'm buying and reading books and starting a serious design. My area will be about 25 by 20 foot.

Hello

I have a HO Layout on a 10x8 and 11x5 benches

Track is of my own design and have not chosen a RR to model. I have been thinking of using Milwaukee Road But I have Locos currently for:

Santa Fe: SD45 and SD40-2 Athearn
Burlington Northern: SD40-2 Athearn
Soo Line: SD40-2 Athearn
Southern Pacific (1984 Olympic): SD40-2 Athearn

Also Union Pacific: DD40X and SD40-2 Bachmann

Any suggestions?

Jeff..... Isn't model railroading GREAT??? As far as suggestions go..........What is the limit of one's imagination?? You can build your layout any way you please and as long as it isn't modeled after a particular road, anything goes!! You can run whatever engine you have and when you get tired of that one, take it off and replace it with another. Main thing: JUST HAVE LOTS OF FUN!!! .....Richard

Hello! No grumbling from you HO guys, please. I'm a 3 rail 0 gauge man. I work in Highrail -- scale size cars and fairly wide radius. Just starting a new layout in a room that will allow me about a 20' x 34' "L" shaped layout. Railroad is freelance, but based on Lackawanna (DL&W NOT Erie-lackawanna!) Sussex branch in northern NJ -- which is near home.

Hi guys. My name is Dwight from Newton, Ks. I model the S Fe in the 50's. It's HO on 2 ft. wide shelves around the room and at chest level. I'm using 2in. blue foam with Woodland Scenics N scale foam roadbed and Atlas code 83 track. I prefer n roadbed because of the sharper ballast profile. With over 10 locos in the zebra scheme you can see how i came up with my user name. It's called the Pauls Valley and Santa FE. It runs from P V to Chickasha Ok.

Welcome, Dwight! Thanks, for your post. It sounds like a really, neat, layout!! I'll bet that your combination of road-bed materials, really makes for some smooth and quiet, running of trains!! How big of a room is this layout, in?? Does this railroad have one main line and sidings, or perhaps, two lines where you can run more than one train at one time. Let us all know some more about your railroad. Richard

Welcome to the Board Dwight! Sounds like you railroad and mine are extensions of each other (except yours is HO, mine is N). I expect to see a few Zebra Stripes on my layout too (if it ever gets that far!!)The Santa Fe and Southwestern must be just over the hump from Paul's Valley and Santa Fe! Happy Modeling!

Hi Richard. The layouts in a 12x12 room. It's one line with a yard at Pauls Valley, a passing siding at Maysville serving 2 tank car loading docks, and a wye and yard at Lindsay. One leg of the wye serves a cattle pen and the other leg will eventually run through the wall to serve Chickasha Ok. This section will be served by the Rock Island with interchange taking place at Lindsay Ok.

Hey John you sure you don't want to switch scales. If you don't no problem. I also have an N scale layout on a shelf below the PV and SF. I built it for my 2 boys. Ha. Its loosely based on the trackage at Lyons KS. The locos paint scheme follows SFs blue and yellow with the exception of no warbonnet, yellow cab and nose and end of long hood, silver trucks and fuel tank. Hope I haven't bored you guys. I get long winded sometimes.

No such thing as long winded when yer talkin' trains!! Its funny that you mention scale because I just recently switched FROM Ho scale to N!! No goin' back now I'm afraid!! Happy Modeling!!

Plains states do make for easy landscaping

I've had a tabletop plan for years. Someday soon I will build it!
It centers around a fanciful, fictional passenger coach yard, and I will have just enough freight for passing track activities...

Scale is N.
Size is 4x8
Period is streamliner era ... from UP M-10000 to Deutsche Bundesbahn diesel TEE set, with a heavyweight consist, a lightweight consist, and a European overnight train to boot.

Also, a five stall Rapido roundhouse and turntable..

Sorry for getting long winded!

For, John Perkowski: John, you don't ever have to be concerned about the length of your, "post", here at this forum. Everyone here seems to really, love and enjoy model railroading! I authored this topic and by the number of replies, you can tell, we are all, "into", model railroading! So John, why not get busy and start that layout you described in your post? If you need any, MENTAL stimulation, or HELP, or HELPFUL OPINIONS, then just log on to this forum and let us all hear back from you. Happy modeling and good luck with your layout. Richard

hey Richard,
I am a big SP fan and have always been one. I model SP, ATSF, and use to model UP and Amtrak in HO. I have sold off the stuff I no longer model and am thinking of selling my ATSF stuff to go completely SP. I model premerger era with '95 being my cut off date. I live in Azusa, Ca and am a member of the Pomona Valley Model RR Club. Our layout is fairly large, takes about an hour to go around it once (with others running as well).
I dont have the exact dementions but you get the idea. The layout is analog (no DCC yet) and is mostly freelanced, no real particular place although we do have a loop similar to Tehachapi and pass similar to Cajon. You never get bored . I also paint and decal most of my stuff. My SP models include SD7/9's to SD70Ms and AC4400CWs. By the way, If anyone is interested in my ATSF models, please email me at: locomotiveSD7@hotmail.com
I am also interested in SP locos for sale.
Thanks and take care, Jack.

I sm glad to see that this topic is still growing. I recently submited an artical to the Narrow Guage Gazzette, and if it s accepted, it will be a series on "getting back to the hobby" and a part of their "getting them out of the boxes" series. My point is I will be promoting internet use for the hobby and this very forum. So I hope to see many more narrow guage guys join in. I will also set up a web site to parrallel my article.

I also took my family to the "Great American Train Show this past weekend in Indy and they had a little bit of everything on display. Everything except On3, which is my interest, and Traction, which is my other interest. I hope this year to continue my dive back into the hobby. I have settled on a theme and basic layout. I only need to work out demensions and pick out the structures. My theory is that you should model based upon a reason for each activity, such as an indstry that requires a rail spur and the associated services to make it work. The challenges of the construction, or terrain, would also be driven by the local that would support the industry.

This is a great hobby and I like where this forum is going.

Keep up the momentum!

JMH,
I look forward to seeing the article!! As you know, I am also a big fan of narrow gauge and On3, but space restrictions and choices made by my kids for scale have moved me back into N scale (don't get me wrong...I'm having a BLAST with the N scale ). I too like the looks of the Forum. Scott and I are some of the folks who were with this forum when it started, back before format changes we see today. It is a good place to meet and chew the fat about modeling!! Happy Modeling!!

Thanks for the good word John. I was, and I guess am still a bit of "rubber" guager. I have HO, S (Flyer), O both scale and Lionel, as well as traction, and of course On3. Opps, I forget the LGB I also picked up when I traded in all of the N I used to have... Yes, used to have N. I never owned Z guage. The HO I have consists of a bit of everything. European models, seventies era US desiels, some steam (I used to model the NP, but sold it off years ago for a down payment on a home). Same thing for the old HO logging models, as in I used to have many.

As for my current interest, I love the level of detail on the O guage, and I am prepared to sacrafice running a large layout (that is of course the advantage of N) for a limited one in O. I probably wony be able to run more then a four car train, and I think that may be ambitious. I envy your goal of modeling N and being able to put together consists and, if you have a hill, adding a helper on those long trains. N guage offered the opportunity to run trains of over 100 cars! N and HO are of course more popular, so you can find others more easily then I to work with. My layout will be modular, so not only can I move it, if need be, but if I follow the NMRA standards, I can hook it up to others, at some of the larger opportunities. For example, this fall the National Narrow Guage convention will be in Salt Lake, and I am sure there will be an On3 modular layout present. I do not expect to be ready for this one, but there is always next year.

Keep the faith, and get the photos on the web so you can share the progress you are making!

Hi Dwight. I will be interested in some of your experiences. I am setting up my first HO layout. Its on 36" deep shelves around the outside of a 10' x 11' room. Today I finished installing 1.5" rigid foam insulation as the subroadbed. I plan to use Code 100 Atlas flextrack as much as possible. My next challenge is track layout design. I'm trying to figure out how to turn the train around with only 36" deep layout, a little deeper in the corners. Rich

My layout (when I build it) will be freelanced HO, the Spring Lake Railroad, based loosely on the BR&P (Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg - (B & O), all hand laid track. Steam/diesel 1950's era.

Hello modelers!!!!
I model the B&O R.R. from 1950 to 1965. All in HO scale. Yes i'm big on steam and the biggest of the line the EM-1 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone. My layout is 16'x 8', and 8' x 8'. it goes around the walls in my basement in a "L" shape. I modeled that year span to run steam or early diesel. I live in Pennsylvania, so I modeled the B&O from Cumberland, MD to Connelsville, PA. I still have some landscaping to do but almost completed. But as for "only the B&O" on my layout isn't aplicable I also model the Western Maryland as well. I got double mainline for the B&O, and single mainline for the WM. I'm in the process of modeling a M-1 4-6-6-4 Challenger for the WM, and a EE-3 2-8-8-2 for the B&O, but only one down fall I have is pictures of the orphan EE-2. I've been hunting for pictures to complete this locomotive and I haven't had any luck so far. If anyone can help me in completing this task i'd be very greatfull. Thanks guys, and Happy Railroading!!!!! ~John.

Wow, I just started my collection: not near as advanced as some of you all. I have a humble display of about 4'x6'. I'm big on Kato Unitrack. I'm not patient and its easy to use. I'm not sticking to any particular RR. I have a double track single oval. I have a ranch theme with a Spanish style passenger depot. I run a six car Amtrak Superliner fomation on one track pulled by an f40. And a simple 10 car freight train on the other(2flatbeds, 3 tankers, 5 boxcars) pulled by a Dash 9 in the contemporary Silver and Red Santa Fe color scheme. This is all in N Scale. It's tough to get Amtrak stuff in N scale! Anyone else experience the same problem. It seems that everything comes out in N scale 5 years after its been out on HO! HO has an F59 Locomotive now! No Fair!!!
I would love to see that stuff come out in N scale. By the way, I think Kato's finally going to release the Amtrak Genesis Locomotive in N Scale sometime this year!! I love Amtrak stuff if you can't tell--I'm frustrated though they never have anything in N Scale.

I model in n-scale & I have 2 ENGINES with the DCC in them, I have;

CONRAIL & C&O

The C&O I got first with the DCC controler, ordered them both from different places. At first the DCC had an internal short & we learned that the person who programed them did was not a good person so she was fired, so I got it back working ok now! So after programing & testingm I got the C&O to work with my layout. I now pull passenger trains with the engine, I am hoping to get a PENN. engine to pull my PENN. Passenger cars! I also have a 2nd DCC engine which is CONRAIL & I am using it to pull my freight cars. I run both around the track together. I do not think I want more then 2 DCC engines because the walk around looks like it can only take 2 of them. Now maybe there is a way to operate more, but I am going to have some standard engines operating as well! Now someday I plan to move & re do my layout which I call BOB'S VILLAGE!

Keep them on track :-)

I am Lynn from Whitehouse Tx into HO only, and model the udxz5ndtr ;os6;litfmux[ci Railroad. That means I model any thing I put my mind to. I'v got about 90 locos, Riv., Atlas LL, P2K, Athearn, IHC, Bach., Tyco, Mantua, steam and diesel and all different road names. I cover from the DeWitt Clinton and early steamer to modern diesels. I've bought some new, but most at garage sales so I'm not near as wealthy as you thought. My layout is 7'X 24' running 6 trains around at a time. I have some old towns and some newer, so I stand in front of the scenery that goes w/the age train. Enuf about me. I've got a LOT of questions, but at a later time. I'm new on computer and just learning about forums. Hope I can find this one again.

I just got the green signal.
Many, many decades ago I received my first train set, an American Flyer and growing up in the Chgo rail capital made American Flyer more realistic in my mind. When I started my working career, I commuted daily on those double decker Chgo & North Western commuter
cars into downtown Chgo. I also had the opportunty to ride the CB&Q-CZ, PENNSY BROADWAY, SANTA FE -ELCAPITAN AND THE ROCK'S
ROCKET. In Jan 97, I walked into a Grand Rapids Mi HO hobby shop, thinking I knew everything about trains.
Two years later I found out that what I didn't know exceded what I did know. I underestimated both time & money and had my decimal point in the wrong place(guess thats why I flunked accounting) Four years later we
are running an freelance HO design,nyc-penn-c&o freight & passenger, late steam to diesels, mid 50's to 70's on a 17x5 and8x5 totaling 120 feet with block controls.
My wife & I are maxed out in track, so we are in the scenry stage,a downtown,farm, gravel/concrete plant.Have 60 buildings,300 people,cars and 5 single engine(non-motor)
planes=trains, planes & autombiles. Had 5 disasters with Rivarossi Steam Engines. Would like to add early amtrak new walters budd 85 footers coming out & perhaps a Bachman-Spectrum F40PH. I'm still behind the learning curve both in modeling and computer skills. This concludes my train profile, till the next whistle stop.

Hello, I guess I feel like a real newbie at this train stuff. Have 3 Challager sets which I was lucky enough to pick up on the cheap. Lots of curved track (all Bachmann). Have my tables all set up and in the process of laying out my track (11 X 9).
Don't know much about the subject yet but am learning as I go. Am an HO fan, for the ease of things one can get and the modeling aspect and the freelance appeal of not having to model on any particular track system. Would appreciate any info that any deem a must. Still have basic wiring system, not electrically inclined. Toots and whistles to all.

Hey Salt Valley, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I've been diddling for about 15 years and I fewel real green. The reason, I believe, is like you, I don't model anything in particular. I know what I like to look at train wise and go from there. I can count wheels on steamers, but diesel model numbers throw me. As far as any help, the only thing right off is layng track. I get Atlas code 100 nickle-silver flex track for about $1.40 (the cheapest) and have no problems with it. I take my time and lay it VERY carefully with good connections. To me, track says it all. I had lots of loco problems until I found out a lot of it was track. Lots of ways of laying track, Dremet, nippers, solder, nails glue, etc. but thats up to you, how YOU want to do it. All this is off the subject of RR you model and all, but that is what forums are for, find out, question, and help. Lots of luck

Thanks Lynn, and I won't feel like the long ranger, just taken it day by day, my main industrial for this Valley that I am contructing is an old Salt Mine (brining mill) in Kansas, am using Legos for making models until I can find the apropriate kit to bash for the buildings, I want my layout to have a old to new type layout so if I want to put something I like that is old like a panhandler or old miner with his mule on the mountain it won't look to out of place. But on the other hand I want to run some newer stuff like a carny to give it a up to date look, I know it is a long haul, but will be well worth it when it is near completion(which I understand is never). Toots and whistles everyone.

I'm sure it will be, equally, well done.

I'll look forward to watching it's progress.

Hi There fellas. I live down under in New Zealand and have only just come on the web. My layout is sort of modular in HO. It is made that way because I exhibit it every so often. The basic size is 14feet by 14 feet but is extendable if there is room out to 14 x 30. If the occasion arises I can open it out into a straight line 80 feet long or there abouts. It is not fully sceniced as yet It has an elevated section full length which self-contained and not connected to the main lines at all.It is purely to keep the crowd interested. I built a hi-level station for that section. The rest is crontroled by MRC Controlmaster20,s I am purely freelance and run anything that takes my fancy.Happy railroading to all... JIMBO the KIWI>

I have a small 6x8 HO layout with about 40' of mainline and 30' of sidings, a dozen turnouts, reversing crossover, turntable etc. About the limit you can fit in the space I have. I have all small steam ca.1910 and love to modify and detail cheap off-the-shelf power. I am running simple block electrics with a dual powerpack and have repowered virtually everything with can motors. Because of confined space I have lots of 18" radius and some steep (4+%) grades common on logging and short lines which makes doubleheading necessary with my dozen or so engines. I went the lazy route with all Bachmann NS e-z track which gives me the option to easily modify the layout to suit my mood. The layout, while small, offers single operator continuous running and lots of yard operations. It ain't too purdy but captures most of the elements of MR ops.

I build in all scales, but my own layout is a modular Sn2, built to my own standards(no other standards exist!) The modules are 2x4, with a single track set in 7" from the outside edge. I like having scenery in front of the trains, it gives a better idea of the woods these trains ran through. I model Maine 2-foot guage rr's, mostly Wiscasset&Quebec/Wiscasset, Waterville&Farmignton and Sandy river.
lots of new stuff on the market for S-I get all my stuff from Train&Trooper. I use N guage for my track, with handlaid code 83 rail. When I get to hidden track, I can just use N flextrack. So far I have one module almost done, two more started, and at least half a dozen more designed. I will be showing these starting next summer, if you are in New England area check them out.

G'day Chris from Melbourne Australia.
My favorite railways are Victorian Steam, I'm modelling a free lance HO layout that takes up most of a 13 ft x 10 ft shed.
I work on the theroy that if I like it I run it. I'm certainly not into rivert counting.
. I do enjoy alot of the American Narrow Gauge gear but find that it becomes very expensive once it gets out here.

Look forward to reading what tips and stories everyone has

Hi everyone!
I have a Midwest-generic 3" x 5" layout in N scale that's only two years old this February. It has two primitive cabs (cobbled together from train set transformers) that allow some minor switching and another train to roll along the main line. I do greatly enjoy using an Aristocraft wireless throttle. I swap buildings, engines and rolling stock to represent the Chicago, St. Paul & Fond du Lac RR circa 1857; a Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific branch circa 1963; and a Thomas the Tank engine layout I call the Elgin & State Line RR that is especially attractive to my 7 year old son.

A few people asked me about my practice of maintaining multiple 'scenes' on one layout. I started with a LifeLike train set in N scale that had a CRI&P GP18 and some rolling stock, and was 'hooked' - after reading five years worth of Model Railroader in the local library, I sold most of my other hobby stuff to spend on a layout table on folding legs - which I stored behind the living room couch -covered with a tasteful blanket - when not in use since we didn't have a basement. Since I had to take things off and on the layout regularly, I got used to creating and tinkering with different scenes.

I've not much $ to spend on the layout so I purchased about 20-30 structures on light cardstock from an outfit called EZStructures for about $20. They have a small 'western' town, rural structures like grain elevators, rail yard structures, urban buidings, factories, etc. It took me about a year to color, cut out and glue these all together, and I swap them around on the different scenes.

In the interim, I researched more of our local rail history, bought a Bachmann old time trainset and built it up using MDC old time rolling stock. Lastly, we discovered Tomix n-scale Thomas, James & now Henry - they don't work too well on our Atlas turnouts - their flanges are a bit too deep at 1:148 scale - but visiting children love them (and I must admit I admire the Gauge 1 scale modeling on the videos).

HO Amtrak all the way!
Father runs a fictitious freight line with some intermodal activity and a Conr, uh, CSX interchange. The layout is a 21x21 box with a chunk taken out of one corner.
No DCC, nothing fancy, just good trackwork and lots of use, especially this time of year.

I have enjoyed reading your various experiences with model rail and so I'll share my latest!

I just got back into model rail roading and took the plunge in a big way. I switched from my Bachman stuff to the much pricier but nicer Marklin. I went and spent over $1700 on a Marklin layout and added a bunch of stuff to it.

I started with their Class 128 (12X) Electric locomotive with 5 freight cars and and about 10' of track and added another loc (a EuroSprinter BR 152) and about 30 freight cars and 40' of track.

I set it all up in the basement on three pieces of high density board.

I am amazed by the level of quality and detail that Marklin puts into their stuff. The locs each weigh almost 2 pounds each and are made of steel. The have an amazing amount of tractive power, as they are powered by the almost silent "C-sine" motors that add to the realism of their being electric locs. They even have real movable Catenary's that function for providing the positive electrical current. The freight cars are all different with several heavy duty 6 axle flat beds, coal cars, tankers, cargo. etc...

The BR 152 is a real neet model as it's based on the Dispolok (www.Dispolok.com) version which Siemens in Germany uses as a back up Freight loc. So when I double head them (not that they need it with only 35 cars), it seems more realistic. This loc has a power output of 6.4MegaWatts (8500hp!!!)

Anyway, I am really enjoying this setup and can't wait to add to it. I have already spent $5000 in my dreams.

These things are amazing, with a tractive effort of some 250 grams each, they weigh 750 grams (1.5 lb) each and are made of Zinc, Steel, and Plexiglas. The Germans seem to spare no expense with this stuff.

Hi! I just found this forum and thought I would join in. I model in HO scale, but my trains are packed up until I get a chance to finish our basement (I hear it is difficult to finish a basement around an existing railroad).

I want to build a modern era railroad (mid 1990s on), preferably through the Appalacian (sp) mountains of Pennsylvania with a portion set aside for some urban scenery as well. I envision my railroad to be a part of a larger system stretching from New England and the East coast to the midwest (going from Boston and Baltimore to St. Louis or Kansas City). I haven't settled on a name yet, but I am thinking or Allegheny, Monongahela, & Ohio (hey, I grew up in Pittsburgh). While in high school 15 years ago, I used the name Chartiers Valley, but that is too regionalized for my tastes now.

Hmmm... I thought I had already posted to this thread.....

I have an Amtrak layout with 2 Athearn P-42's, a baggage car, an express car, a transition, 3 sleepers, a diner, a sightseer, and 5 coaches (all Walthers). It's about 14 feet long and runs around on about 100 feet of track. I have it 85 inches off of the floor, traveling around my living room, den, through a tunnel into my kitchen, across a 9 foot long bridge (2 Atlas Pony Truss (886) and 4 Atlas Curved Chord (887) and 2 Pony Truss bridges, all sitting on a 9 1/2 foot section of unistrut, painted a colonial red) spanning my dining room opening, over the front door and back into the living room.

It took about 4 months to build and lots of 1x4 and 1x6 red oak. I like it......

I also have an American Orient Express limited edition Rivarossi train and an unfortunate purchase of an 8 car, Denver & Rio Grande Western IHC. (Looks good, runs poorly)

I'll highly recommend the Athearn and all of the Walthers equipment (after installation of the Kadee 5's).

Hi:
I model the New Haven Railroad in HO. I pretty much get to pick what I want in terms of equipment, motive power, colors, etc. I found the scheme to be fairly schizophrenic because of the wide variety of management changes over the years. Each one bringing it's own flavor. However, I also threw in some massive steam like a Challenger and a Big Boy. I guess when you stop every 200 yards, it doesn't help to have these on your line. Right now I just do bench work. My "stuff" is in the house I left behind with my Ex. Someday.

Hi Richard. I am Keith, live outside Brisbane Australia I have HO and N gauge and about to try and start building a round the wall layout in HO. I think it will be freelance loosely based on an US branch line because of the price of gear here in Australia.

" My layout is around the room (13x15), above the top of the door frames. "

I just registered today because I'm looking for advice on building a "Shelf" layout above the door frame of my office.

I'm specifically looking for shelf brackets with hidden or minimal supports visible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and my favorite road(s) are Denver and Rio Grand and Durango&Silverton

Buckeyestation....
I have always wanted to run a railroad, through-out a house! I am very interested in how your railroad is progressing.
Do you have access to a digital camera? Can you post some pictures, for us all to see? If not, please elaborate on your layout, it sounds "GREAT"!!!

I model a free lanced model of a CSX sub. On my layout I modeled some of the Selkirk Yard. What a pain!!!

Right now, I'm working on CNW & BN in HO scale. When I'm finished, I also intend to model WICT & WSOR passenger trains, in addition to the aforementioned railroads. It should be much fun, having these roads go through a river valley, with hills

I have to get on this.
I live in Richmond, CA and I am curently modeling the Southern/Pacific/Union Pacific and the Santa Fe (BNSF)
I have an 3 N scale modules and aN HO module.
I enjoy modeling in HO but I like running N scale trains--its schizo but there it is. At 54, building models in Ho is much easier but I love seeing long trains run. I usually just add a few details to N scale models or just weathering--can't see that close.
My modules are based on Bay Area scenes, theyre all built on 32" slab doors. The 3 N scale modules depict Port Costa in its heyday, The San Pable Bay near Pinole where the SF and SP tracks run close and Pt Richmond/the SF yard (now allBNSF and UP)
The era modeled on the modules is late 50s but I run all era trains on it.
The HO module is along the SP tracks through Berkeley Emeryville, still a 4 lane speedway used by UP, BNSF and Amtrack-this is contemporary era.
I run trains from outside these eras and railroad companies including GN, WP, RI, Penn
now that I'm retired, I can spend more time on these as long as it doesn't get in the way of golf
Does anybody do N Scale Bay Area traction?? I'd love to model the Key System

Aw heck, I'll weigh in.

I model the Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway, a 234-mile RailAmerica shortline. My HO layout is 8' x 12', split-level. Small but mighty model of a small but mighty railway!

Fellow Model Railroaders...

Just stopped back to see where this thread had gotten too....It is a wonderful response from ALL OF YOU!!!
Please be sure to stop back from time to time, that way we can keep in touch, if anyone has questions or comments.
I am going thru the stage of installing crossbucks with working gates, as well as 3 light, block detectors. All are L.E.D.lighting and use photo cells and computer boards (chips) for activation. It really adds such realism, to the layout! Very tidious work, however, but well worth it!
Keep on railroading, my friends and may God Bless Us and America!

Hi, I'm Bud from Southwest Georgia (Albany area)...
Railroads I model:
MAIN TWO: 1.Seaboard Air Line/Alabama Southwestern (the ASW, a fictional SAL subsidiary)
2.Western Railway of Alabama (with locomotives and equipment from the Georgia Railroad and the Atlanta and West Point mixed in, just like the prototype often did
TRACKAGE RIGHTS: Central of Georgia (I also run a couple of modern NS locomotives with 1950s-vintage C of G cabooses just for laughs)
LOCALE: Supposed to be North Montgomery, Alabama area where the W of A and ASW/SAL have a "joint trackage agreement"
Also take shells off the locomotives and put on different shells to change the whole thing over to PRR for a while when I get bored of all that...(hahahahaha)
GAUGE: HO
TIME PERIOD MODELLED:Roughly 1964 to 1967, with some weird, hilarious exceptions
This isn't my first layout but it IS my first point-to-point one and it's very small. In fact, it fits inside the laundry room of my mobile home! (lol)It's basically what you might call a free standing shelf layout with a little bit more width on each end...I model two towns in central Alabama, one actual and the other fictional. The track is Code 100 and I, too, use plain old-fashioned block wiring (but have nothing against DCC). I try to feature a lot of run-down eyesore stuff on the layout for comedy value and try to include comedy on the trains too (and with prototypes like the West Point Route and the Seaboard, that isn't all that hard to do...
Favorite Railroads/Prototype: Seaboard Air Line, Ga. Group (Ga. Railroad/Atlanta & West Point/W of A), Central of Georgia, NS, PRR, M-K-T, the HOG, FEC, BNSF, GAS&C, AB&C, SCL, Frisco, and many others, these just stand out as ultimate personal favorites at this time...
Glad to be here...hope I can add a little humor to the "festivities"

Westpoint64...
Thanks, for the humor! You need a lot of humor, working on the railroad!
Sure wish you had a digital camera and would share some pictures.
Small layouts tend to have a lot of little details, to make up for it's size.
Keep us informed of your continued progress.

Richard, I also am on the lookout for some ideas, too..I have a leftover locomotive shell and I want to paint and letter it for the SCARIEST, GRIMMEST, MOST FEARSOME RAILROAD EVER! (HOO-HOO, hahaha!)I like how grim and spooky the old PRR DGLE freight scheme looks but may even have to go to creating mockups of old scary TV production company logos to get a real "fright bomb" locomotive. I'll be posting the question "What's the grimmest, scariest, most fearsome railroad you could possibly model?" in the forum, and I eagerly await the replies I'll get...
Have a spooky Penn Central day!

Westpoint64...
How about the, "Headless Horseman Line"?
I kind of see, a weird take-off, of a headless horseman riding the Norfolk-Southern stallion!!
You could add some crimson blood effects to that scheme. Or, perhaps the dude carrying some sort of, crude or barbaric weapon!! What do you think???? I know you wanted suggestions on your other post, so I guess this one, will be just between you and me, here.
