I have stripped the old and worn paint from my steam brass engine. I have cleaned it with soap and water and now am ready to paint.I have an air brush and compressor. I read someplace that it is a good idea to rinse it with white vinigar and dry before painting.What i need to know is what is the best paints to use (primer, top coats etc) I probably will paint it black with light weathering effects. Any suggestions?

The reason for the vinegar is to etch the surface so the paint will stick. Make sure to wash it good afterward. Even better it blast it with modelers abrasive blaster. I know a lot of people do not use a primer. As for the type of paint, use what you are used to. You can use the best paint in the world, but if do not have the practice with that type, its wash time .

Once you have cleaned and prepared the surface you are to paint, DO NOT TOUCH IT. The surface must be absolutely clean for paint to adhere to brass, and touching the surface with your hands will deposit oil on the surface and cause poor paint adhesion.
Generally speaking, I try to minimize the time between when I clean a brass engine and apply the first coat of paint. Usually, several hours without interruption are required from the first cleaning to the first coat of paint.
The application of vinegar is to provide a slight etch or tooth to the brass, which enhances paint adhesion. Be sure to clean the vinegar off before you start to paint. The same affect can also be done with a quartz or sand blast of the surface of the model.
