looking for new gear drive for a mantua steam switcher loco its about 63 years old now and still runs but will not move ,mantua is no help??????

I'm surprised that Mantua is of no help, they are usually pretty good about those things. Sounds to me like they could get some good PR out of a deal with you "After 60 years this engine finally needs a new part" or something along those lines!! Anyway, I suggest looking at e-bay or elsewhere online and start going to swap meets and train shows and looking for spare parts. You might also consider a classified ad in Model Railroader, although that might be a bit $$!! Good luck, let us know if you find the part, and Happy Modeling!! John

hey thanks for the info not many train shows come to fla,and if they do its a hell of a ride but ill never give up looking ,my dad passed these trains down to me and so on and thats not bad ,one engine of 12 in fleet the newest is 2years old the remake of the santa fe FP 7 since the other one is wearing down the oldest is a 2-8-0 w/tender which is 67 years old this year and is a mantua, Ill rite a letter to them instead ,thanks jcater

Lazer, You could also try a custom rebuild with a new can motor and some Northwest Shortline parts. I've done quite a few of these and have been super happy with them. Just figure the appropriate dimensions of your motor and find a motor to fit in Walthers.com Good Luck, Scott

You probably have the old Docksider. I had one and the problem was the plastic gear wearing down. I am fairly sure, as was suggested that you can get a direct, brass replacement from NWSL. It may be worth remotoring, although it would lose it original nature and may be more trouble then it is worth.
I loved that model. Very early and it looked so detailed to me at the time! My brother has it now along with some early Mantua freight cars. My Dad originally built them in the 50's.
