I'm always put off by the high prices of HO scale, or any scale for that matter, autos and trucks ($5-$15). Does anyone know of a supplier with more reasonably priced autos and trucks? Is it possible to take some of the correct scale Hot Wheels, Matchbox, or other toy cars and easily modify them to an acceptable quality and detail level?

I've got a bunch that I use, and cost a dime to $1 each, very few $1. At garage sales I pore over the toys to see what I can find. Anything with a racing stripe, number, flames, or dragsters are immediately discarded. Once in a while I find realistic cars, an ocassional pickup, and a fair number of semis. Wal Mart and such have them for $0.77. Out of 80-90 choices I may find 1-2 that will work. Some are too big and I ignore them. Keep looking and looking, and be very selective. A couple expensive ones for close-ups,. and the others fill in fine.
