I am rather new to the railroad-modeling arena but have managed to plan a reasonable three train HO platform and track layout.
I am now working on the control panel and need some advice.
I will be using miniature DPDT switch for track power. If anyone can suggest a manufacture and model number for a reliable switch - it would be helpful.
I plan to use a miniature momentary push button switch for the turnout or track switch. I am looking for a lighted switch so I can tell which condition the switch is in from the control panel. Any suggestions on part number and manufacture – or an other way to accomplish the same thing. I really can not tell which way the track is going from my position at the control panel.
Need to buy, or make, a power source. Which ones should I stay away from and which are the good ones. What features are most useful?
Actually, I will probably have more questions as I get through this thing so if anyone feels brave enough to give me your e-mail address – and has “been there done that” would be great.
I have read a number of books for the local library but they do not get into the nitty gritty – if you know what I mean.
Any help / suggestions is appreciated.
Thanks!

Radio Shack might be a good place to start
looking for control panel switches as they
have a good variety at reasonable prices.
As far as your other questions go, there are
3 books that can answer them:
How to wire your Model RR by Linn Westcott
Easy Model RR Wiring 1st or 2nd edition
by Andy Sparendeo
All 3 are published by Kalmbach and available
in most hobby shops.
Hope this helps.

Atlas model railroad co makes electrical throws, singles & doubles.
The doubles are called a selector, part#215
and has four slide switches to a unit.
Postions are, up-off-down.

Singles, part#205 has three slide switches to a unit. Postions are, up for power, down for off.
The Kalmbach basic wiring book, $17.00 MSP is an excellent idea.

Like S.T. stated Radio shack carries a variety of miniature slider switches but it's size will be determined by the gauge of wire that's going to carry your track power.
For instance, you will not be able to solder
20 gauge wire to to their smaller sliders.

I've used DPDT toggle switches from "Miniatronics" for years and have been very satisfied. I think you will find them to be a little cheaper than R S. Your hobby shop should carry them or go to their web site at www. miniatronics.com
